For music? Home theater? Both?
How big of a room?
Do you have $500 for 2.1 speakers and sub, or does than need to include a receiver?

To add to KEW's post, is this for far field or near field?

Mostly Home-Theater/Gaming; maybe a little bit of music now and then.

It's gonna have to include a receiver, yes.

And near field (I'm guessing that means if the speakers are relatively close to you)?

thanks for replying guys..

As I suspected...

I would get a pair of these:

With their deep bass performance you shouldn`t really need a sub. They are sort of HUGE though lol.

and if necessary, an external DAC like this:

Although find a less expensive one. It might not be necessary but often if your source is a computer, you get some unwanted noise.

Thanks for the recommendation, will look into it!

My source for these will be a TV BTW, and yeah I definitely get that unwanted noise from my computer with my headphones (ATH-AD700); drives me crazy lol.

I agree that those are the speakers to get if you can make the space for them.

Note that the amplifiers are built into them.

What about a receiver?
The behringers have built in amplification. Unless your source is a record player, you should have enough voltage to drive that amplification to its limitations. Just hook em straight up to your computer. You may need to get the appropriate cable to make the connection but that's about it.

IF you experience noisiness from your computer, that's when you would get an external DAC as I suggested. Cheaper ones do exist and should do the job just the same, I'm just partial to that one
