Is this unit necessary to run the Kappa build? My receiver has built in crossover points; can I just use that instead?

Is this a situation of "it will work but not optimum" or "you'll destroy your sub if you don't have it"

Thanks.

The DCX is recommended for optimal use, as outlined in the original thread. If you do not use a DCX some protection filter must be introduced to protect the driver at 20Hz. Please see the original thread for more information and recommendations.

you can get away with the DSP1124P, but you need a good eq, not the avrs:) the 2496 gives alot of options for peq and crossover

As far as I know the DSP1124 is an equalizer only, it will not act as a crossover, nor is it capable of applying the proper protection filters. If this is the case, I would not recommend it alone - another piece of equipment would be required making the DCX a more reasonable choice ;).

The DCX provides the protection filter, it allows IDEAL crossover ability (if you use a component amp for your mains, you should run both the main speakers and sub(s) through the DCX - and you can achieve perfect/seamless transition), it allow for room correction and it can allow you to adjust the 'tightness' of your bass; you can make it sound exactly like a sealed cabinet if you use the right DCX filter.
