Is there a reason it would be impractical for a receiver to internally measure voltage and amperage to provide a power readout as opposed to a gain readout in db?

Voltage and amperage aren't fixed for any given volume setting; they vary wildly based on the source material. In addition, amperage for any given voltage will vary by frequency as a speaker presents a complex load to an amplifier vs a simple 8 ohm resistor. Of course some amps (McIntosh comes to mind) do include power meters which add a touch of the ever important cool factor.

And could make for a fun DIY amp face plate project :D
