Just some subjective opinion here, keep in mind that I'm a huge Pink Floyd fanboy. :D

Just got this concert Blu-ray around Christmas time, haven't had a chance to fully enjoy it until today. Overall there are some excellent pieces of music here, with a terrific Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 mixes.

The concert contains an albums worth of new material from the Pink Floyd guitar master, as well as some old favorites (and not so favorites) recorded at Albert Hall . By far my favorite performance is a rare version of Echoes from the 1971 album "Meddle", complete with oft-called "seagull sequence", albiet slightly shortened. Gilmour's guitar and Richard Wright's Organ/Synth take the leads in the mix, and maintain terrific seperation. Other notable Floyd pieces include Time, Speak to Me/Breathe, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Fat Old Sun, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, and even a VERY rare performance of Wots...uh the Deal? For a slightly obessed Floyd fan like me it was great to see DG playing guitar on tracks like Echoes and Shine On again, he is truly a master of phrasing and tone.

If there's a negative, some of Gilmour's new music is a bit slow and difficult to swallow for me. But other parts of it shows the blues style that Gilmour brought to Floyd, and transformed the band's sound after Syd Barrett fell from grace.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix is phenomenal. I played it through my PS3/Onkyo 705 combination. The PS3 reported a 4.0-4.6mbs rate (2-3mb for the 2 ch PCM mix) througout the performance. IMO channel seperation and ambiance were amoung the best I've heard yet from a concert release. I did notice that surround channel use was mostly for crowd/ambiance/background information, which is fine by me, since this is usually the case when you are at a concert.

This is definate must have for any Floyd fan, and even worth checking out for those of you only mildly interested. At only ~$25, it's a great Blu-ray bargain, and possible reference material for those of you looking to "wow" your friends/family.

I finally finished the second disc last night. I really enjoyed this concert set. It was cool to see David Bowie, David Crosby and Graham Nash working with David Gilmour, Richard Wright and the rest of the band. I thought David Bowie's rendition of Arnold Layne was very cool. This was the song that made a name for Pink Floyd in the UK under the leadership of Syd Barrett.

You're right, though, while some of DG's new songs are a tad slow, I love the bluesy sound emanating from his guitars.

The one thing I still hold over my parents is that they wouldn't let me go to see Pink Floyd in '94. They claimed it was the group of people that were going. The truth is, they were afraid I'd smoke some wacky weed. The funny thing is, I've just never had a use for it. Oh well, I guess this is as close as I'll ever get.

I noticed that the DD TrueHD bitrate dropped significantly on the second disc. For most of the songs, it was between 1.8-3.0Mbps. I thought the lossless formats would have a consistent bitrate. It looks more like a variable bit rate.

One question, the video made me curious. There are scenes where the video is as perfect as anyone could expect. Then there are scenes that are very pixelated. I noticed the same thing on Pulse. It could be artistic license. I don't notice this on any other DVD's or Blu-ray's. Has anyone else experienced this?

This, more than movies IMO, is the best reason for the new HD audio formats.
I'm not sure if I'll invest in this release, that is once I actually pull the reluctant trigger on a BD player, but it is encouraging to see that good quality music is available in one of the lossless formats.

I think you'll notice a significant improvement in both audio and video quality once you do pull the trigger.

I really liked the placement on this one, it seems like you're in the 10th-15th row. It's really intimate and personal at times. Then they zoom out, pan and swoop to give you a sense of Royal Albert Hall's immensity an grandeur (Sp?)and also the grand scale of the performance...pretty darn impressive.

Thanks, that was helpful, obscbyclouds. I'll certainly buy it. It's true that David Gilmour's latest is quite (too) soft and slow but the guitar work makes it up.

I'm counting down the days.
11th May - Roger Waters Live - will be right at the front and take as many (illegal) pics as I can. Huge fan here.

I have the standard DVD version and haven't been able to get Echos out of my head since I heard it! :) Very good performance. I have to go back and view Pulse again because I wasn't impressed with it. ( Floyd for me is love it or leave it depending on my moon at the time)

How Gilmour "lets the music happen" and doesn't rush it really makes his style for me. Some of his solo stuff is a little slow but as has been said the blues influence shines through nicely.

ps I was going to do a review of this one but you beat me as I was being lazy...chicklet for you!:D
