So I was watching the third Matrix. During the climax towards the end of the movie there were a number of HUGE THUDS. very low and powerful. During one of these scenes I definetly heard a noise that sounded as if it came from my sub that I wouldn't want to repeate. I was most likely watching it at 80-85db. the gain on the sub at around 50%.

I've never seen the sub make this type of noise before. It almost sounded like paper flapping/ripping? could that of been the sub clipping? It was only for like 1 second - and again I've never heard it do anything similar in any other movie I've watched.

I have a svs ISD-PB10.

Subs do not clip, but amplifiers do. :)

It sounds as though it could have been some port noise, or possibly the woofer flapping around if it was trying to play below it's (enclosure) tuning frequency. When that happens, the air in the enclosure stops acting like a spring and the woofer just flops around (this could be termed as unloading). The woofer's powerhandling is usually 1/2 to 1/3 of normal at this point. If the woofer were to continue to play that deep for a long period it would be quite easy to burn it up.

However, I do not think you really have anything to worry about unless it continues to happen. That is kind of odd though as SVS subs can be tuned around 19hz or so.

I highly doubt it was my loudspeakers as I have them set to small, and the default crossover. (80hz I believe)

Thanks for the correction on my verbage. I'm hardly "seasoned" with the terms, and knowledge :)

As it is, I've watched a bunch of movies with some good base, and I've never heard this. Perhaps it was just in that dvd..

I was refrencing your subwoofer, not your loudspeakers. :)

The best way to check is to try it again. If it is repeated, then you know it is just that spot of that movie.

Oh, I know you were talking about the sub, not the loudspeakers, I just wanted to add that bit of information about my setup.

I really wish I checked the chapter/time on the dvd player! heh somewhere in the last 20-30min.

OK. Understood. Now go try to see if it can be repeated. Chop chop. :D

Chapter 26.
1:39:39 into the movie. when the "entity" of the matrix addresses Neo by saying "SPEAK!"

I couldn't reproduce it at -15db. but it shook the house, and I can easily feel air coming out of the port a good 4' away.

I'm fairly sure it was in that spot since it freaked me out and I was nervous during the final fight scene every time they crashed in to something :D

If someone has a meter, I'm really curious at how low that hits...

The "speak" gets really loud around 25-30Hz. But that whole scene has alot of Bass going down below 10hz! Check-out the waterfall chart
HERE . (you'll need to scroll down half the page).

I know during the final Smith/Neo fight the giant "rain bubble" shockwave can get quite high SPL at around 10-12Hz!!

Master and Commander took a picture off my wall, that was double hung. My HGS-18 pressurized the room so much, it lifted the wire of the picture up a good half an inch to get it off. Amazing. I remember my ears almost hurting during that scene. I didn't even hear the picture fall, I just noticed it when I went to the phone a bit after.

Some of the newer movies are really going LLOOWWWW.

I can see my heavy drapes waving during some of the heavier scenes of some of these new movies. Lots of subsonic stuff going on.

Oh, a good resource for testing the edge of your subwoofer is.... (sorry in advance)..... Late Night Tip by 36 Mafia. Yes it's rap, yes it's pretty damn aweful...but is a known to really give subs a workout for SPL levels. Not so much sub sonic, but test it's sonic levels. Not sure where exactly it hits, but it's probably around 26Hz I have been told. Car stereo guys call it the "subwoofer blower" song. I personally use it a lot to test things out... it seperates the men from the boys.

So it was most likely my port just "chuffing" then??? After watching that whole scene a few times It does shake THE WHOLE HOUSE. The first time I thought it might of dimmed the lights... but it couldn't of..... could it? rofl :D I figure it did slightly shake the chandeler in the other room though!!!

I may have to finally upgrade my home sub. I have avelodyne HGS-10, and I do not think I am quite getting low enough. I will have to check out the Matrix revolutiions now to see if I can get decent output at those frequencies. If not, it is back to the drawing board. Thanks for the Spectrum charts.

HGS-10s are badass for their size, and they still sound clean. A lot of those "push as much as you can out of a little box" end up soundng like crap, not with that HGS-10.

If you want more output, I'd look for a second, rather than getting rid of it.

I had similar sound from one of my subs where it made a fluttering plastic sound .When i took it back for repair they told my that glue had lifted aroung the input board and air was being forced out the rca jack. may be similar

were you using the rca jack at the time? if it flows that fast out that jack, I'm guessing nothing was plugged in to it.

I know what it all looks like. Thanks for the links. :) I have pulled the sub from the enclosure, it is impressive. I like it very much, but I am always looking for even more performance. I am thinking a JL Audio 13W6v2 in a custom sealed enclosure to start. If I do no have enough outptut, I would try ported at 20hz. It would be run with at least 500 watts RMS power.

Bah. JL Audio. Overpriced and overrated. You know they don't warranty their voice coils now? There is a reason for that. ;) Just some friendly advice.

You want output? Get a big ol' amp and buy a RE Audio XXX. They are the beafiest you can buy in reason. My buddy had a single 12" RE Audio XXX, ported at 28Hz, and he registered 148.7dBs. And it was only powered with a MB Quart Q-line 1000 watt amp (it's RMS is 1600). He simply used the standard ported box they have online and the truck was stock (no dynamat or anything).

www.reaudio.com (check out the XXX, even stronger is the MT, but I doubt you'll find an amp to handle that one to be honest, unless you have a lot of scratch).

RE Audio XXX:
RMS: 1600watts
Peak: 2500watts

I've seen them plugged into 110 outlets and they take it like nothing.

JL has NOTHIN on them.

Good luck with your project, PPLLLEEEASSSEEEEE keep me updated if you do it. I want to do a DIY home subwoofer (probably using an 18" XXX) at some point.

The statement in bold is a LIE.
I am a JL Audio Retailer. They replace the woofer free, once, if any "user error" is incurred. The second time you pay for it, basically half the price of a new one, when, in fact, you get a new speaker. That is awfully nice for something the customer did to the sub.

I am NOT, repeat, NOT into SPL. I am Sound Quality first, then clean lowdistortion output next. Those drivers are not too hot in that department. The JL is the ONLY car sub I have heard that comes close to or exceeds the Sound Quality of my Velodyne. To me JL is NOT over priced for the linearity and low distortion output achieved. Very few come close.

I can keep you updated. It may not be for awhile though.

So back to the OP... :D I don't really need to be concerned as the ISD-PB10 has a cutoff correct?

Thanks for all the help.
