Cylinder PROS:
-costs 200 bucks cheaper (x2 if you buy two)
-easier to move
-less footprint

Cylinder CONS:
-tall = less location options
-not front firing / ports not on same plane as driver / aesthetics / cheapy cloth cover
-2hz less extension than the box

wow! my poll powers are back! :)

anyway, it's basically a question about:

is 2hz extension = to 200 bucks?

I think the $200 is worth not having a sub that is 6 inches taller than my Aperions!

The box sub is probably easier to move around...

ps - cute avatar. He's gettin' large! Stop feeding the little man sticks of butter!

I don't think your missing out on anything by getting a cylinder version of the same driver, I highly doubt you would notice a difference in those 2 hz when it comes right down to it...

If they fit better in your room, go for it... Its a great idea for saving some space...

Ed Mullen said the f3 of the cylinder is 20hz, while the f3 of the box is 17hz

hmm, thinkey thinkey

i gotta get my PCi out of the box again to see how well i like the cylinder looks.

I've been hearing rumors of a PC-Ultra/2 coming soon, just thought I'd throw that out there.:D

Isn't the cylinder tuneable? If so, then I wouldn't worry about the couple extra hz. I love my cylinder, but I don't know if I would want one that is that tall.

the killer question would be ...

will the ultra/2 be better than DUAL singles or be like the plus/2 and plus relationship where the DUAL pluses can go deeper and be louder than a single plus/2.

yes they're both tunable ... but if i tune the cylinder lower, it will have that much less port area (2 ports open)

I have a feeling that we wont be seeing a Ultra/2, as the box size will really have to be large/heavy.... Shipping rates/fuel costs has started to put a dent into the thoughts of development I believe...

This is some of the info I have been seeing lately... Not sure on how reliable that info is...

Dang you OPEC;), I could only imagine how big a PB13 Ultra/2 could be as the single is nearly the size of a PB-12plus/2.

But it would still sound great, and have plenty of output... so no reall loss really.

last i heard, there are still no finished plans on the ultra/2, but planning nonetheless. i would guess shipping would jump to 200-250USD for a single ultra/2

this is news: unless the ultra/2 is equal to the size of dual singles and have equal ports ... it cannot beat the duals in the low end.

But it would still sound great, and have plenty of output... so no reall loss really.
yeah. :) i'm emailing Ed M now to check his opinion.

I'm partial to cylinders, but I have to say the Ultra looks menacing in box form :D

Very interesting stuff here guys. Personally, I have never owned a cylinder sub. I do, however, remember the bazooka tubes when they were quite popular in the realm of my car audio days. Gosh those sure were the days though. ;);) My guess would be to go for the box sub myself as I usually stay with what I know that works mentality.

Cheers,

Phil
