Custom Home Stereo build advice

I decided to try and make a small stereo I can hook my phone up to and wanted some advice on how to go about designing the internals of said stereo.

My idea was to use small speakers from an old CRT as the output and have an 1/8" input male cable running out. I also want to use a wall adaptor as I don't like the idea of a rechargeable battery.

What else would I need to run a setup like that?
I am comfortable using a soldering iron as I do my own guitar work.

My parts list thoughts:
amp
DC adaptor (based on Volts and current of the system)
Speakers (on hand)
Speaker wire

Honestly, if you are going through this much work, why not look into at least a little better speakers to try to get a decent audio experience?

Recycled CRT speakers are pretty much certain to sound like crap!

Are you familiar with https://www.parts-express.com/
They are an excellent supplier for all sorts of audio projects.

As far as an amp, likely a small Lapai will do what you want (it is a PE brand).

Also, check out the PETT forums, you may find similar projects over there

The CRTs were what I had that weren't being used. I have other slightly better speakers. It was more for the experience of making such a device that I was going to use those. PETT forums seems good. Found a few projects that have a similar design as what I'm looking for.

I want to use this project to understand what components are used in a basic stereo system. In the future, I plan to make a bigger version of this as a house warming gift for a friend. He needs a music system for his Man Cave. I was thinking Fallout themed.

OK, fair enough, a learner project is almost always a good idea! Especially if you plan to give a followup project as a gift.

I use this little Lepai as the amp in my arcade cabinet build (actually, I use the older model, this model should be a little better since it has a better IC chip-amp)

I think many of these standalone boards would also be a good choice, but you may need a power supply for these

I would also suggest, maybe you want to add Bluetooth capability? Then you could stream music from your phone without needing a cable.

And, when you get to a final build for a gift for your friend, definitely look for better speakers!
Maybe use this kit

Or, at least choose a high-quality full-range driver for the final build.

Regardless, we LOVE PICTURES. Even if you get most of your info from PETT, we would like to see your work as it progresses and the final builds.

Thank you slipperybidness for the advice. The Lepai seems perfect for what I am trying to achieve. I promise I will use far better parts on the gift.

Also I'll take pictures along the way of both builds and I'll make sure to make build threads so you guys can see what I've done and maybe give some more advice to the fresh meat.

Thanks Again!
