Current receivers that are upgradable to TrueHD

Are any of the current crop of receivers future proof in regards to Dolby TrueHD and the other HD-DVD/Blu-ray audio formats? It seems to me with the HDCP copy protection baloney that the analog 6.1 inputs won't cut it.

Great Question!

I think that this is a great question and one more should be asking.

I am sure that most receives will be able to "handle" any new audio player output using existing codecs.

Whether or not there will actually be a specific codec written for the new HD video formats is speculation but I would not be surprised. It seems the video industry work horse is the one that pulls the audio industry waggon.

There are several players that have RS 232 connections for upgrading firmware\software so if you are concerned, make sure the mfg you buy from has a reputable upgrade path and support system for this type of upgrade.

Happy Holidays!

Yes they will be compatible, however the DSP Processor has to be preprogramed to decode the track. Denon's 5805 and Onkyo's TX-NR1000 are the only two candidates that are upgradable physically.

Now for backwards compatibility

Dolby Digital + will carry a 640kbps track and have two other flags. One to enable DD+ (receiver/preamp DSP permitting) and another flag for 6.1 (if the mix is 6.1)

DTS HD (AFAIK) will do the same.

So in short if the flag can be detected the added capabilities will be put to use.
