Curious about studio monitors/subs

Greetings. These might be stupid questions, but I've been really curious about these studio monitors and sub:
K+H O300D active studio monitor ($5200/pair)
http://www.proaudiosuperstore.com/klein-hummel-300.html
K+H O810 subwoofer ($3500)
http://www.proaudiosuperstore.com/kh-o810.html
Sorry for not linking to the manufacturer's page, but it's not loading at work for some reason.

Now, these aren't the most expensive studio monitors or subs available of course, but I've seen a couple pictures of people's desks on head-fi and other forums with these particular speakers. I'm wondering what makes them so special when you can get an amp/preamp or avr and speakers and a sub with much better specs (I know paper specs don't mean much without testing/measuring) for much less money? Especially the sub. What makes that worth buying instead of a SVS Ultra or a JL Audio Fathom? I know that studio monitors are supposed to be neutral/flat/uncolored/whatever, but I don't understand the cost/benefits here, and if somebody could help satisfy my curiosity, that's be great :D

They are a "brand name" at the corresponding pricing in the marketplace....just like in home audio. Unlike Home audio, to command their pricing, they must be well engineered, which they are.

Such as...what specs?

Nothing. Other than the brand name and personal preferences.

cheers,

AJ

By specs I mean frequency response and sensitivity and such...for example:
O810 - frequency response 18 Hz - 300 Hz (-3 dB)
PB13 Ultra - +/- 3 dB 18 Hz-150 Hz (anechoic) in 20hz mode

Thanks for your response though :)

There are many options for speakers, but specs don't tell you jack. You need to see a waterfall graph and an off-axis response chart to properly evaluate a speaker scientifically. Of course the room has to be up to the task too.

The cost of speakers are determined by the marketing department. If people will pay too much then they will sell them for too much.
