Cross-over settings

I'm confused as to best way to setup my subwoofer crossover settings.
I'd appreciate the suggestions:

My speakers are:
L/R Main 22 Hz — 30 kHz
Center 50Hz — 30kHz
Satellites - no specs: 3" midrange 1/2" tweeter
Subwoofer - no specs: 8" woofer

I currently have the cross-overs set to
L/R Main - 80 Hz
Center - 80 Hz
Satellites - 150 Hz
Subwoofer - 150 Hz

I know the Sattilites and subwoofer sould be upgraded but thats not likely to happen for some time. So I have to make the best of the equipment I have.

thanks

it has a lot to do with personal preference. Whatever sounds best is different to a lot of people. i think THX standard crosses everything at 80, but most people do it lower than that.

i think id keep the cross on your satelites around 150-200, and your center between 60-80, then your fronts id set to around 40-80.

you can mess with it around there. I like to set lower crossovers with the front speakers, maybe around 40-60. And, since your sub is a little weaker you might want to set your fronts to large, and cross them at 40. It looks like they can easily handle it.

What are your mains . . .

I doubt they really play that low, but if they do then you don't need a sub. Try setting the mains to LARGE and compare the bass performance. Your current 8" sub probably only plays down to the 40 Hz range.

Wild guess would be that you have Def Tech mains? They're well known for seriously exaggerating their response numbers. In fairness, I don't think what they list is the -3dB of the speaker, so the specs are misleading at best. Anyway, I think the crossovers you've chosen are fine, but I'd try dropping the rears lower just to see if they can handle it, and the mains I'd try 60Hz. Is this an H/K receiver? I don't know too many besides Sony that allow selectable x-over per speaker zone.

j_garcia you got it in one.:D

The mains are Def Tech BP-8
The Center is a Def Tech Pro-100
The Satilites and Sub woofer are JBL SCS-135
The receiver is a Sony STR-DE1075

We got the mains several years before the home theater. We just liked the way they sounded. The JBL SCS 135 was added when we moved out of our home into a Townhouse rental and then setup the home theater. Now that we're in a new home I wish I could replace them. Since I can't, I want to get the most out of what I have by setting it up the best way possible.

I never really believe specs. I've read way to many resumes that didn't really match the persons experienceor abilities. ;)

thanks for the help

I would not send any signal to the sub above 80Hz. it will be localized too much which you don't want with a sub.
