.....they may find another someone to replace Steve Irwin that's equally as good at working with the animals, snakes, and spiders, but they will be hard pressed to find a personality and likability that Steve possessed naturally....I think he was a one-of-a-kind......

If you really think about it, what was his personality other then a couple catch frases?

"Crickey, look at the size of that ______!"
"Gorgeous!"

Sorry, I prefer more professionalism. Rob Bredl is the new guy.

I had an Australian guy over my place today to fix our Ice Maker that got zapped by lightening. When I asked him how he felt about Steve Irwin's unfortunate passing, he said "it was a tragic loss, he was a great man and a great ambassador". Before today, it didn't even occur to me that he truly was an ambassador for Australia as he was the face most americans are most familiar with when you think of their country.

Well at least we still have Paul Hogan though he hasn't wrestled any crocodiles in quite some time.

Seriously. Irwin might only be recognized by some for his gregarious on-screen personality, however his contributions as a conservationist dwarf his tv persona. The fact that he was able to use that personality to peak the interests of millions, and use his recognition to help own, organize and/or fund numerous conservationist projects and related causes, certainly warrants some respect for him and his untimely death. Yes, he might have been a bit goofy on tv, but isn't there a better place to criticize a man who helped this world in more ways than most of us could ever hope to do?

Criticize? Maybe I should have put some emoticons in my post. I never doubted his accomplishments, or all the great things he has done for the wildlife community, it's just evertime I picture him, I see him saying one of his catch frases.

When it comes to watching the show, I prefer Rob Bredl. But Steve Erwin has done much more in the way of conservation.

Folks,
Gosh, I gotta say I am really amazed at the responses on this thread. I was not really expecting the overwhelmingly kind remarks, but hey, that's good!

Let me explain, before his death, I was of the opinion that Steve was nothing more than a crazy unneccesary risk taker trying to get publicity, and I was actually quite surprised that he didn't munched on by a croc a lot earlier. However, I did think he was really funny how he did it, with his catchphrase of "Crikey!" etc. Eventually he grew on me, and I kind of liked him, but kept it to myself figuring that people would look at me and say "Oh grow up, he's just a nutcase..." So I was really expecting that more people would actually say stuff like that. Not that I wanted you to, mind you, but I just figured that there would be more replies like that.

What I didn't know was that he was a major conservationist. That is really neat. Though I think some people mix him up with an environmentalist. To me those are two completely different things, with the term environmentalist having somewhat of a more negative connotation in my opinion, conjuring up images of enviro-wackos chaining themselves to trees, or Greenpeace blowing up stuff.

Conservationism to me is more like what the Boy Scouts try to do. Make sure that we treat the world around us with respect. The old Boy Scout "Leave No Trace" method of taking only pictures and leaving only footprints is a great way to describe it. Taking care to not waste resources while still using them wisely, not forbidding them to be used at all. It sounds like Steve-O was one of those kinds of guys. I'm glad to hear it. :) Rest in Peace "Croc Man".
