My new condo is done soon so Im building a system. I dont need booming sound but like rich, detailed sound for listening to music as well as for movies. I like rock type music, nothing to hard. I like a clean base but dont need anything too powerful to shake my house.

I want everything to be done using the miniumum of wires so everything will be HDMI. I already have a 40inch samsung LCD and an upconverting HDMI dvd player.

Here is what I am thinking of getting.

Onkyo sr605 reciever.

Klipsch quintet II speakers.

Dayton 8" subwoofer, from partsexpress.
]

What I want in a system.

1) Ability to play music on all 5 speakers.
2) Can connect my ipod
3) Great sound
3)All HDMI connections.

What do you think oh mighty audiocats?

I think you should go audition as many speakers as you can find and see what sound you like. I do not like the sound of Klipsch at all but I think I heard one or two guys say they like them.

Several people are having issues with the 605 so keep that in mind.

Dayton makes a decent sub but I have no idea which one you are looking at.

nice receiver, the SR605 will handle both video and audio on HDMI. The Klipsh speaker set has received good reviews and should work well in a small listening area.

Since the Quintet speakers have a low end only down to 100 Hz, your sub should have a crossover point above that. The Dayton 8" claims to go to 180Hz, but I think I would recommend the Dayton HSU8 for a few bucks more.

If there is a weakness in your system, it is probably the subwoofer, but to get anything better will cost considerably more. The Dayton subs from Parts Express will work fine, they may be a little rough for music applications, but ok for "low frequency effects" on Dolby digital.

Very nice system picks. I've heard the Quintets at BestBuy and
must say they sound very good. Make sure you find them on sale. Retail for them is a little high. BB was offereing a free sub last week with the Quintet system. Don't know if they still are. The 605 is a solid receiver from what i've
heard. The only thing you need to ask yourself is how many HDMI in's do you forsee yourself needing in the future? The 605 only has 2.

Thanks for the quick responses. In regards to the Subwoofer crossover, I admit I dont get the details bit will look at the sub you mentioned. If it is withing $50 I can handle the extra cost.

Having 2 HDMI inputs is potentially an issue I have forseen but dont really know how many things have HDMI. Right now all I will have is 1 input from my DVD. I believe if I ever got HD Cable that would be another? Does a playstation 3 use HDMI inputs and would they go to the reciever?

I like the sound of the Klipsch but have found it is hard to audition other quality speakers that are not HTIB from BB junk. I live in Toronto, Canada so I could probably look around.

What's the total budget for the entire system? Also, how large is the room this system will occupy?

Its a New York style loft. 26 X 16 with 13 foot ceilings.. However I do have neighbours next door so I really wont ever go more than half volume......

The budget really is as cheap as possible, but right now around $850-900.

The restrictions on the speakers is Black, small and unobtrusive as possible.

I'm not even into these speaker. Just not my cup of tea. But with your room dimensions I recommend them over the Klipsch Quintet II system.

The sub with this package will be better for your size room also.

or

Marantz SR4001

A little over target budget. But well worth the extra investment. IMO

Thanks for the details response. Question about he marantz reciever. It states HDMI 1.1, as opposed to HDMI 1.3 which I believe the ONKYO 605 is. What is the difference and does 1.1 carry audio as well?

While those speakers look pretty sweet they bump me from a $380 speaker set to $1000. The better half might hurt me with that one. Why do you feel those are better? More power or "better" sound?

I turned my system up to half volume once and it made both ears bleed;)

Be careful about the 605. It has a history of injecting noise into the output in the Dolby Digital mode. Perhaps you can ignore it, but it motivated me to replace the unit I had. Definitely not recommended.

My reason for recommending them was the fact your in a large room. The sub you mentioned from Dayton will do nothing in that room. The HSU IMO is still not the right sub, but your not looking for slam anyway.

The HSU speakers have a horn tweeter, and so do the Klipsch speakers. And yes I think the HSU's will sound better then the Klipsch. Just my opinion. I think there are other options that would sound better then the HSU's if your open to suggestions.

I like the Yamaha receiver better and you wanted something that you could use your I-Pod with. That is why I recommended that.

And if someone else could answer your HDMI question, I would appreciate that. :D

Thanks. I believe I will take your advise with the reciever and maybe look to pump up my sub a little(while still keeping it small). While I don't argue that you speaker recommendation is probably right, the price of the Klipsch quintet II at this point is too attractive to turn down($299). Especially considering I have $200 gift certificates at best buy and you can get them their

If someone else could comment on the HDMI 1.1 vs 1.3 it would be appreciated.

1.3 provides more bandwidth and that will allow for processing digital data with less compression. At the moment, not much uses it so you should think of it more as a future proofing issue than a currently practical one. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but you would need to weigh your own need for future-proofing.

SVS was selling their overstocked SBS-01 systems for $799. That's a system that can kick, but I'm not sure it's still available.

Not overstocked anymore. But I agree, great system. :D And a more appropriate subwoofer for the OP's room.
