Hey guys,

Just wanted to vent.

I had a guy out to my house last Saturday to calibrate my Samsung plasma. As part of his service he also does an audio calibration. No big deal since I've already calibrated my system manually myself, but I figure why not? So he does the audio first. He uses his own RTA and calibration mic and a test disc that has both Dolby Digital and DTS test tones. He calibrates them separately because he says he often finds discrepancies between the 2 codecs. So he begins with Dolby, gets everything set up and then goes on to DTS. Lo and behold he finds that the rears are 3 to 5 db lower than they were on Dolby. So he decides to use my UMC-1's internal test tones to try and diagnose the problem.

Now for some reason he needed to have the UMC set at 60 to get 75db on his equipment. I have never listened to my system at anything over 40. It's pretty loud in the room but nothing too scary. The test tones on the UMC are volume dependent so he starts to use the UMC's tones and they are INCREDIBLY loud! So loud that I had to leave the room. I go upstairs and about 5 minutes later the guy calls me downstairs because my XPA-5 has shut off and will not turn back on. Sure enough I try turning it on and it just goes back into shut down. I tell him to just forget the audio and finish calibrating my TV.

He finishes with the TV calibration and then collects his full payment before leaving. I'm thinking, "Really? You just blew up my amp and you still want me to pay you?" After he leaves, I check my speakers and I've got a blown tweeter in both my left VR2 and my VR12 center!!! Now I'm really pissed off! Not only do I have to pay to ship my 80lb amp back to Emotiva to get fixed now I've got to find replacement tweeters for speakers that Boston doesn't even make anymore. I call they guy up and tell him what's going on and he refuses to take the blame. He says that the test tones in the UMC-1 are too loud. Of course they were too loud, you had the thing on 60!!! I tell him that I'm stopping payment on the check and he and I will have to work out an agreement for partial compensation but no way am I paying him full price after all the work I'm going to have to do to get my system back in working order.

I call Boston today and I can get a replacement tweeter for my VR 2 but they don't make tweeters for the VR 12 anymore!!! Luckily Emotiva will fix my amp under warranty but I'm SOL in regards to the VR 12. I just happen to have a VR 920 lying around and I guess I'll have to use that as my center from now on.

I'm just royally pissed. I'm pissed at the guy for blowing up my amp and speakers. I'm pissed at myself for going upstairs instead of telling the guy to stop what he was doing. But I figured the guy should know what he's doing, he's supposed to be a professional. Common sense should have told him that the volume he was calibrating at was WAY too loud. Lame.

You have my permission not to pay him anything at all. If he complains tell him I said that's the way it is when you break other people's sh!t and fail to accept responsibility. It's also the stupid tax for not getting cash up front like a hooker.

Feel free to post the moron's name and number here so that others in your area avoid the moron. I'm glad to hear that Emo is taking care of you on this. That's huge.

Damn, sorry to hear it. Yeah, not only would I have stopped him, I would have thrown him out as soon as that happened because clearly he should have stopped on his own. If it was too loud to be in the room then it was over 75dB.

You can pay him, but you should deduct funds to replace the speakers.

... and the shipping of the amp ... and the time wrapped around straightening all this out. In short the guy ought to be paying Darien.

Is he insured?

One would think that the clown would have some idea on how to calibrate a HT sysstem without doing damage.

If he's an independent, small claims court might be your only recourse but if he works for somebody, you might have a prayer then.

It's not like you're running junk that craps out when you look at it funny. I can only wonder what hapens to the other systems he calibrates.

In any case, local word of mouth can be a powerful way to build a business or destroy it.

Yeah, that too.

I don't even let the majority of my own family touch my system, much less someone I don't know.

To his credit, the guy e-mailed me today and offered to completely refund my money. He said he'd mail me back my check so I didn't have to deal with the stop payment fee from my bank. But I already did that yesterday. He also offered to let me borrow a couple of Paradigm speakers until I get mine fixed.

So I guess him giving me a refund will be about even with the money and time I'm spending to get everything fixed. I haven't looked around for a VR12 yet though. Not sure what those are going for on Audiogon or eBay. I would think around $150 or so.

Yeah I was a little scared to tell Emotiva the truth because I thought they might consider that abuse but they were cool about it. They did say they wouldn't help me out with my blown speakers but I guess that's to be expected. The guy you don't want to hire is Ted at Optimum Sound and Vision.

That's stinks. Doesn't Boston source their tweeters to a parts manufacturer? If they do you might be able to find the part through another source.

Well, at least he tried to make good, but that doesn't change the fact that you still have to deal with it. I can abide by someone making a mistake as long as they own up to it and take care of it.

Now I've seen the tweeter and I don't think you are going to be able to source a replacement easily. The used market is probably your best bet.

Glad the guy is refunding your money. Good luck finding a tweeter.

WTF! HT001 is to start with the volume low and increase gradually! Unbelievable that a "pro" would lapse on that fundamental.

That is a sucky situation and I hope the limbo state gets resolved sooner rather than later.

Now go read a book :D.

Id not buy that. Is there a matching center for the LR?
The most direct match is unfortunately the VR12. It has the same woofers and mid as the VR 2's. The next best match is the VR 920. Luckily I have one of those lying around. I was supposed to sell it to a friend but he never came up with the money, so I guess that works out. The VR 920 is a good speaker but it does sound slightly different from the VR 12. Possibly because the 920 uses two 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" woofers where the VR 12 uses two 6-1/2" woofers.

I've got Immortals on BD at the house and I guess I'll have to watch it with my TV speakers.

Luckily I still have my Onkyo amp that drives my rear surrounds. I guess I could switch that one to running my fronts and at least have stereo sound for the time being. Then again I've still got the blown tweeter in my LF speaker so that might not even be worth it.

I don't have surrounds right now :) Running 3.1 off the XPA-3 and I don't mind it.
