Hey guys new to this form I am having issues with my sound through my Home theater sound system when and ONLY when I watch blue ray movies... I run a Denon AVR1803 as a receiver (more than 10 years old and what I think may be the problem) Last year bought new Polk Audio Monitor 70 tower Speakers as my Fronts a powered 400w Polk Audio home theater sub Polk Audio Center channel and "no name" backs.. When I am watching Blue ray movies any Special effects sounds my tower speakers send out a "cracking" noise is the best I can describe it.. and this happens at any volume it does not have to be cranked up. This happends even at the very low volumes... I thought it was my old fronts so I replaced it with my now Monitor 70s but am having the same result! I can watch DVDs, TV, Music at insane volumes and works perfectly with no “cracking”. I run 16 Gage wiring to my speakers as well..
Any thoughts?? Please Help!

Welcome to the forum!

It sure seems like it's related to the audio track on the blu-ray(s), but I have a couple of questions to help narrow this down:
  1. Is this with any blu-ray that you've used, or is it limited to certain ones?
  2. How is your blu-ray player connected to your Denon receiver (multi-channel analog or digital)?
  3. If you are using a digital connection, what is displayed on the front panel of the Denon when you are watching the blu-ray(s) (e.g. "DTS")?

I used to get high-pitched popping noises from certain DVDs when using my first Dolby Digital receiver, a Yamaha from 1997. It was almost surely due to some limitation/fault with the decoder. I can watch those same DVDs with my newer receivers and not here those artifacts at all.

Hi Adam this happens with every blue ray I have ever used.. I have the Blue ray HDMI out plugged into my TV then Digital audio out from the TV to the Receiver as my old receiver does not have any HDMI input/outputs.. And it can be in 5 channel Stereo or DTS with the same result...

Which blu-ray player do you have? I ask because I want to look at your connection options.

Your TV is probably converting the HDMI audio stream into two-channel stereo (maybe not, but I've only seen one TV that didn't). You audio issue might be due to the TV's decoder. You will probably be better off connecting the blu-ray player audio directly into your receiver, assuming that's an option. You'd keep the HDMI connection to the TV for the best video, but you would connect the digital coax or optical audio connection from the blu-ray player (if available) to an available input on the 1803 (if you have any left).

Thanks for the idea Adam I will try hooking up the Audio in the way you suggested. If that fails would you say its time for a new receiver?

I'll bet it works once you get the blu-ray player set up to output the audio correctly. The fact that you don't have any issues when listening to DVDs makes me think that it's just the way things are being connected, with the TV audio decoding/downmixing probably being the issue here. If it doesn't, well, I'm never one to talk someone out of new gear. :D However, I'm sure there's other things that we can try...unless you would just like a new receiver. ;)

Excellent! I'm really glad that it worked.

it's ridiculous some of the options when setting up blu-ray, and how easily someone can miss out on optimum sound

I guess that I'm not seeing the real picture, but with the exception of the video side, Blu-ray sounds like a real headache to get working.
