cracking/fuzzy noise

Hi,

I have a crackling/fuzzy sound coming from the speakers on my sound system. But not always! please read on to find out what is causing it.

Here's the setup I have.

Yamaha amp
Mordaunt short speakers (5)
LG TV
LG Bluray player
Virgin Media HD Box

Now, my cable that goes from my Bluray player to the AMP (I think its called a coaxial cable, digital audio out) - this works great, amazing sound in DTS, DD etc.

Here is my problem, I run an optical cable from my AMP to the TV or Virgin media (cable box) and I get noise like a crackling/fuzzy noise from the speakers, it comes and goes, sometimes heavy other times slight. As said, whether its from the cable tv box or TV the noise is there.

I have replaced the cable, and infact its worse (this new cable was £10 more) - I completely re wired the whole system and cleaned up the cable mess behind the TV stand, hardly anything is touching the optical cable going into the amp however my problem is still here.

Now if it was the AMP why does the sound from the BLURAY player come crisp and perfect?

It cannot be the cable as I have replaced that.

It cannot be the speakers as the bluray player works fine.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to what is causing my knightmare?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks
Frank.

We need to know more about your set up, and why you are not using HDMI cables.

There is not enough information here to even take a wild guess at your problem.

Basically everything should connect to your receiver with one connection to your TV from the receiver.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I cannot use HDMI as theres no HDMI ports on the back of this AMP.

If I use optical cable from TV to AMP only I still get the problem.

The only time I don't get the problem is when I use the Coaxial from Bluray to AMP

Thanks
Frank.

There is not nearly enough information here to help you.

We need details of your hook up, especially about all grounds. Especially we need to know how your Virgin media box is grounded.

We need links to the instruction manual of all your gear.

I suspect some sort of ground loop involving our TV and Virgin box. But that is a guess without much more info.

Don't forget you are on a US site. We do not have Virgin or Sky and our TV systems are very different.

I understand Virgin can be satellite or cable. Which do you have. How either your cable entry or how your satellite ground is tied to your house ground, likely has a lot to do with your issue.

Thanks once again for the help TLS Guy

It appears the issue is with the AMP, I have tested a new one and i'm not getting this issue.

So I need to either get this old amp repaired or buy a new one.

Get a receiver and a TV that has HDMI connectivity.

...sounds to me like the optical input circuirty on y0ur amp/receiver is wonky.
