I am running a coxial cable from my DVD player to my decoder. However, whenever I try to view a movie in 5.1 I get interference through the speakers. It sounds like morse code !!!

I have a cheap DVD player and amp, am I doing something wrong or do I just have to accept that interference will happen on a cheap set up ???

Any help you cna give to a complete novice would be much apreciated.

Does this happen only in 5.1 or anytime you use all 5 speakers?

When it happens, it is continuous or only intermittent?

Thanks for your reply, it only happens in 5.1. If I use the speakers in any other mode it is fine. The sound is continuous and very annoying. That is why I thought it must be something to do with the cable/connections???

Hmmm, First I'd say that cheap setup or not, this shouldn't be happening. I don't know how interference on a digital coax cable would manifest itself in the audio domain. However, I suppose a Morse code kind of sound could result.

Try using a different cable. Any RCA type cable should work temporarily.

Is this cable particularly long? Does it run near a source of interferance?

Cable is not long, and can't think of any interference? The only thing I can think of is that I was sold the wrong cable??? I asked in my local store for it, but they didn't seem to sure. Perhaps I should try again.

Exactly what type of cable should I ask for???

As I mentioned above, try using any RCA audio cable temporarily to see if it works. If it does, then there is something wrong with your cable.

The kind of cable you need (permanently) is a digital coax.
