Before I get into the whole HD business I want to find out what are my options to back the movies up. And I really mean backups. Would this
Video Blaster thing do the trick?
thanks in advance for any tips

Audiacc,
Hmm, this is probably not quite you would be looking for to use for what you want to use it for. If you are looking to "back up" an HD type of movie, either Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD, I don't think that this will work. From what I understand so far about both of those formats, they pretty much require either an HDMI, Component, or DVI connection to get any signal out. Now, I am not sure about this, you may be able to get a signal from the svideo port or even the composite port, but I doubt it would be in HD, most likely 480i.

Correct me if I am wrong, ok guys? I don't want to be feeding him a bunch of baloney. :D

In any case, it seems that the purpose of this unit is mainly for backing up analog sources, such as VCR and other older video tape inputs, as well as a DV input for the newer kinds of tapes such as MinDV, and Digital8 etc. It also looks like it encodes in mpeg2 only, which is SD-DVD quality, not the HD quality stuff. It's also not a bit for bit copy, so you may lose something in the transition, but I guess if all of that doesn't bother you, then yeah, you could back up a lower quality version of your movie, but I don't think it is quite what you are looking for. I've seen that DVDShrink works really well for regular DVD's, but I don't know if it supports either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, I doubt it. Nor do I believe that they are even in business anymore, and would not be sending out any updates for it unless someone gets really creative and really brave to go up against the studios because you KNOW they will sue whoever does it. Why do you think DVD Shrink is no longer in business?

thanks for this!
I do not hope to be able to rip HD video in HD quality. I thought about something to backup the movies onto portable player, so I would accept lower resolution and all but I see I have to research more...
Or perhaps somebody made some experience ripping HD DVD already?

Supposedly both HD DVD and Bluray formats have been cracked already. Already there are HD-DVD and Bluray rips floating around on the net.
