Corrupt music files?

I hate to even get into this but here we go.

I have noticed that I get a "popping" or "static" noise when my system moves from one song to the next. This happens when I am playing music from my computer or when streaming it to my AVR.

I thought this was new and started about the time I switched routers but a couple of people who have "listened" to music from my external HD have mentioned the issue too so maybe it's not new. I have also noticed the same issue with music I have downloaded onto my IPOD.

It is more pronounced when listening at the computer vs. streaming it but it's present both ways.

What is this and how do I correct it?

All my music is from WMP11 and in WAV files.

I might be able to shed some light on this for you.

If you stop a WAV file at any point where the wave does cross the zero line you get a pop. I do digital editing in WaveLab. If you do an edit at a spot that is not a zero crossing then your edit sticks out like a sore thumb with an unpleasant pop, like you describe.

So in Wavelab when you line up your edit point, you press a command "snap to zero crossing", and it finds the closest zero crossing point for your edit and it is silent.

Now I suspect your problem is common. I don't download a lot of music from the Net, but I do some. I find the downloaded files often have this problem, and often other problems. So if it is something I really want to keep, I remaster the whole works, and set the pauses between files to be musically correct, and make sure all files and edits are at the zero crossing point. Almost everything I keep I remaster for these and other types of problems.

Generally only downloads from the BBC and MPR are engineered correctly. Interestingly Chandos records has been one of the worst offenders. To top it off the loss less download costs more than the CD, and then I have to remaster it! So I wait for the CD.

Thanks TLS.

Just to be clear, all WAV files are transfered from CD.

I used to have the same issue with Windows Vista when playing back music using WMP or PDVD or TMT. Then I used WinAMP and that disappeared.

Now with Windows 7, I can play the same exact music files on WMP/W Media Center and I don't have any of that popping sound.

All my music files are WAV.

I am not sure my AVR will stream from WinAMP.

Did you have to re-transfer all your music?

I have VISTA.

Streaming, as in hooking up the external hard drive directly to the receiver?

When I hook the HDD directly to my receiver, I never had that popping sound.

I only had the popping sound when I was playing the files via the PC, which was hooked to the receiver.

My WAV files are on an external HDD. So I did not have to re-transfer any files.

Now I just use the Windows Media Center to play all the music files because I love all those album covers.:D

you might want to try alternative to wmp 11 - such as free http://tversity.com/
It should stream music to your avr as well....

hold on, didn't you mentioned you connecting your avr directly to pc using external dac ???
So it's basically audio card, winamp will "stream" to it too :D

All work with DNLA certified equipment, Twonky is my favorite, but doesnt work with 64bit OSs, however their server only will.

That is his office setup with the DAC. This one uses the Streaming built into his Denon 3808.

Whether CD or otherwise, I would bet that the program you are using is not going from one file to the next at the zero crossing point, and that is the reason for the pops.

So obviously windows Vista has the issue and Windows 7 does not.

I have to use xp as there is no version of Wavelab for vist or windows 7 yet.

Streaming as AVR hooked up the the computer.
Then your PC is basically the "Source Player".

Why wouldn't Winamp or any software not work with the receiver?

I've played music files using PDVD9, TMT3, Winamp, WMP, etc.

And the PC just bitstreams any music via HDMI to the receiver.

Yes, PC is the source.

I don't know, I thought I read somewhere that I had to use WMP11 to stream to the Denon.

Ethernet cable is the connection from the computer (router) to the AVR.

When you open your denon menu under where the clients are listed it shows WMP correct?

Also what program are you using to rip your cds to the hard drive? EAC?

Yes, Denon manual recommends to use WMP, but I believe any dlna server should work as well. The reason I mention tversity - its free - well it used to be simple free, now they have pro part. Twonky is awesome, but never was free.

I'm confused, since when WinAmp can be used as DLNA server ??

Oh, Ethernet cable. Now that I've never done.

I only use HDMI cables.

So why are you using ethernet cables, intead of HDMI?

Because your PC doesn't have HDMI?:D
