I'm going to start off first by saying that I'm completely new with technical audio stuff (a n00b, if you will) and that I'm looking for an amp for a stereo system, not a home theater system. 2 channels, not 5 (or 7 or whatever).
Here's my deal. With the help of a buddy of mine (who knows a lot more than I do, but also isn't sure of this issue), I plan to build a couple speakers (or large wooden boxes to hold multiple speakers within, but you know what I mean). I'm getting one 15" subwoofer (lows), one 12" woofer (mids), and four little tweeters (7.5" x 3.25") and a big ol' horn (5" x 15") (highs) per speaker (I'll post links to these speakers at the bottom*). From everything I've read, I'm best off getting an amp that can put out more wattage than my speakers can take because if it puts out less, clipping and distortion can ruin speakers. What I need to know is how to determine the overall wattage of these speakers so I know what amp to get. The big horns are only rated at 75W RMS or 150W peak. Do I need an amp that can go up to 75W, 100W, 150W, or 200W to handle these? Furthermore, my subs are rated at 675W peak. Do I need an amp that can handle 350W, 700W, what?
This all probably sounds quite confusing, but I am quite confused. I want an amp that I know will be powerful enough for these speakers. My buddy suggested wiring the speakers into 3 channels (low, mid, and high) and then get a 3 (or 6 to maintain R/L differences) channel amp. Hopefully this is enough information to atleast get you guys a basic idea of what I'm trying to say. I'm building two speaker towers/fronts/whatevers and I want an amp that will power them efficiently. I want to know what to look for in terms of power, not brand (and why). Thanks very much for your time!
*Apparently I can't post links, but I'll post names. All can be found on eBay from the Car Audio and More store.
