so are all HDMI cables created equally?

To be honest it depends upon the video circuitry in the box. Cable boxes are particularly cheap and cut a lot of corners. Try both and see which looks better on your display.

A 10ft 24 AWG HDMI cable runs $20.31 at monoprice. If the run is short (10ft would be considered short), the 28 AWG HDMI cable runs $7.10 at monoprice. I originally had a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR hooked up to a SD 36" Toshiba CRT (non HD). I was paying an extra $7 a month for the HD box, and called TWC and told them to downgrade me to the Explorer 8000 DVR. The picture quality dropped twofold in the 8000 DVR compared to the 8300HD DVR, even though I didn't have an HD set at the time. I immediately called and switched back to the 8300HD DVR. The HD channels have always been great (even better now on a 37" LCD), but the SD channels really look best on the newest and highest end equipment as far as Scientific Atlanta is concerned. http://www.sciatl.com/products/consumers/new_explorer8300HD.htm http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=hdmi+cable&x=0&y=0

T Tubby Audioholic Intern Dec 28, 2006 #27 Just ordered a premium component cable from Monoprice for $16. Hopefully it's good. Wanted to order a HDMI but they're out of what I need. Got to love the buying frenzy holidays.
