Directv HR20 connected HDMI-HDMI to Yamaha RX-Z7 then HDMI-DVI-D to Panasonic TH-65PF9UK. There isn't a HDMI terminal board available for the plasma.

I can get the speakers on the plasma to work only if I use a RCA-MINI directly from the Directv box or from my Toshiba XA2.

Am I missing something when trying to connect from the receiver to the plasma?

Thanks,
rb

Think of you Plasma as a monitor only

It is connected correct. Why do you want to use the speakers on you plasma instead of using your HT system sound. I actaully did not even install my plasma speakers; they are still in their original box. The DVI is only the video part of HDMI and makes perfect sense as a way to connect the video. Normally with an HT system you only use the plasma as a monitor. The plasma speakers are typically reserved fro those who have the TV onlu and no external ( and better ) HT system sound.

Good luck!

Does DVI even pass sound?

At times, now actually, I'm just listening to CNBC and won't care to have the whole HT thing going. HT isn't up and running yet anyway, speakers are shipping.

I just assumed that if HDMI is sending audio into the receiver I could send it to the plasma using the RCA connectors.

The DVI does not send audio.

Generally, if you want to set up the system for dual purpose usage, HT and general TV viewing, a second connection scheme may be necessary. Does the plasma have component video connections so that you can do your TV viewing without going through the receiver? If you already need to turn on the receiver to get video, it makes some sense to just use the main speakers as well.

I can see why rbj9 is looking to have both. I get that inquiry a lot from my clients and in some cases it does make sense for some time to not have the system on all the time. With that scenario using a duall connection setup is required though. In most cases we would back up the HDMI connection with Component Video and analog audio into an alernate Video input on the display. This helps with setup of universal remote and macro editing. (basically pressing a single button for TV w/surr goes to one input, TV/No Surr goes to the other input)
