If you have an Elite use HDMI, if you have the other types of 360 I would use optical, Toslink, connection for audio and the proprietary component for video. This is for optimal sound and video of course .

when connecting my elite to my receiver, it sometimes has some audio issues, so I use the audio breakout cable and connect via toslink and set my receiver to always use the optical/digital coax connection when on that input. Either connection will give you 5.1 and the same quality of sound.
