Connecting a sub (speaker binding post vs. RCA jacks) question

Hi guys and gals,

Why on the back panel of the sub are there speaker binding posts? I've always hooked up my sub through the RCA jack which is the subwoofer output on my receiver. What are the binding posts for and what would be the best way to hook up my new Klipsch RW12d sub?

Another question I had was around hooking up a second sub. When I decide to go with two subs for my home theater set up should I opt for a second Klipsch RW12d? Everywhere I read folks recommend (when getting a second sub) to go with the exact same brand and model as the 1st sub. I am a total newbie but thought that two different subs with different output levels, speaker size, ect. would compliment each other and provide a richer and fuller sound. Why is my logic incorrect?

Cheers,

p.

You have it correctly connected. The speaker posts are there to connect an amplifier. The speakers would go on the same posts or on a second pair of output posts if the sub is configured that way. The sub would pass everything to the speakers and also reproduce those frequencies below the low pass filter. In your case, you have a receiver that provides bass management so connecting the LFE output from the receiver by RCA cable is the way to go. In my exercise room I have a stereo integrated amp so I use the speaker posts there.

I think a setup with two subs would be better if the subs were identical for consistency in the quality of sound.
