Confusions over analog vs. Digital chord hookup

Only recentley, I have been having a slight problem with my DVD's where the sound will quiet out. This only occurs on one certain DVD player though, and so I figure that if I can get some new hookups, that may fix the problem.

Right now, the DVD player is hooked up to the surround sound system via an Analog connection (or so i'm told the two audio wires coming from the back of my DVD player indicate). If i'm going to siwtch the connection, I automatically assume "digital somethingorother" is the best kind.

So, i'll get right to the point: what is the best type of audio connection chord(s) I can get for hooking my Sony NS55P DVD player to my Sony surround sound system? Something where any problems would be unlikley because of a straight dgital transfer...or something :p (i'm entirley well-versed on the subject)

Is analog even any good?

Thanks again! Much appreciated.

right now it sounds like you are only sending a stereo analog from the DVD player to the receiver. what is the model number of the sony receiver you are using? are you running 5 speakers?

if you look on the back of the sony receiver you should see the same type of connection you are currently using, but Orange in color and something like "Coax Digital In" label. On the back of the DVD player you should see an orange connection labelled "Digital Out Coaxial". if you are looking straight to the back of the dvd player it will be the connection on the upper left hand corner. connect the two orange plugs, the cable you are using right now will work fine for the time being. this is only for sound. keep the existing cable you are using for video. look on page 18 of your manual if you have quesetions about that.

now, to ensure that you are getting digital sound, go to page 22 of the manual and follow the steps. when you get to the DTS part pick yes.

if you dont have the manual, dont worry! its available online! and i know you have a computer with internet access. go to sony.com. click on "Customer Care" in the upper left corner. on the next page under Product Support click on "Manuals/Specs" when the new window pops up type in your model number and you will ahve the option to save or view the manual.

Alright cool, it sounds like that method will probably work. Here is the model number of my sony reciever (which is a 6.1 system) if that will help you more. It is: HT-DDW870
