components by same manufacturer

Is it fair to say, that if you go with a dvd player, receiver, and TV by Sony that things will work better together or is that just wishful thinking?

thanks

The remotes might work in conjunction with each other but sound and video wise, there's no benefit.

If, you've ever had a situation where you have two units that respond to the same remote code, you'll know what I mean. ...you press the button to change the track on a CD and the receiver shuts off or something similar.

Right now I have the Sony 50" LCD and I was thinking about getting a Sony DVD player and Onkyo receiver. Then I started thinking why not get a Sony receiver and then I might be set?

Like MarkW said, buying all the same brands won't gain you anything except the remote thing and maybe all your components will look similar (if that's important to you).

If your intention is to buy the best components you can afford, then rarely would they end up being all from the same manufacturer in my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend a Sony receiver at all. I'm not all that fond of their DVD players either. You are better off going with different brands.

sony is for TV's ...
pioneer is for dvd players ...
yamaha is for receivers ...

I don't know much about Onkyo DVD players but I like Panasonic DVD players myself as a not too expensive option. They make excellent quality players. Yamaha and Denon do as well. There is also Oppo who makes very good upconverting players.

There is no reason to be a name brand whore UNLESS you have good experience with the company AND the component you plan on buying. For example, I would def buy a Yamaha receiver again, or Paradigm speakers.

DVD and speaker options

For DVD players, check out Oppo Digital. I am impressed with the PQ of their budget DV-970HD player and it will also play DVD-Audio, SACD, and photos from my SD memory card.

Don't buy Sony or Onkyo speakers. There are plenty of better options depending on your budget. It is a good idea to buy all of the speakers from the same product line for timber matching, but the sub can be from another manufacturer.

The only advantage I can think of for buying multiple components from the same manufacturer is that the front pannels will match. If you insist on buying a receiver and DVD from the same manufacturer, then go with Denon.

i really want an oppo but i just bought a 5 disk sony dvd upconversion player
and.. i do think sometimes it just looks better so if you can match it would be better but if performance is hindered, like it usually is you should go with separate brands.

From a technical point of view, the most you might sometimes need between the products of different makes might be an output matching attenuator. This only when the outputs from different ancillaries might overload pre-amp inputs, usually indicated when you are very low on the volume control for room volume.

This is not regular though, so I am in fact saying that most of the time you should have no problem. Beware of the sales pitch that equipment of the same brand are "better matched". Not so, except as above.
