Component to → HDMI not working.

new Yamaha RX-V365 ~~
The Old dvd player has no HDMI, so its connencted with rgb component cables to the Receiver. HDMI -in- brings in Cable and HDMI out carries signals to HD tv. I can watch cable in HD but the DVD (video) signal is missing....and all I have is sound...AND its NOT 5.1 either.
Is this a component to HDMI upscaling issue. ??

It should be just a component cable that runs from the dvd player to your receiver, not rgb component, anyway you will have to run audio cable from the dvd player to the receiver as well. someone correct me if i am wrong.

Your receiver does not have the HDMI upconversion feature as far as I know. Therefore, you need to hook your DVD player up with the 3-RCA component video to the component video input of your receiver, then hook your TV up to the receiver with both the HDMI monitor out and the Component monitor out. Your DVD, since it doesn't have HDMI, will have to be hooked to the receiver for audio via coaxial or optical digital audio cable for surround sound. These inputs are probably assignable, so look into your manual about how to assign digital inputs.

Each time you want to watch a DVD, you will have to switch sources on both your receiver and your TV.

I'm sure he just means regular component, with the red, green, and blue cable. But yes, a component, and digital audio cable will have to be ran sicne the receiver doesn't have hdmi upconversion.

That particular Yamaha receiver does not offer HDMI upconversion. I believe you'd need to move up to the RX-V565.

As has been mentioned, or, get a new DVD player or a bluray player that has an HDMI out.
Or, go direct to tv with component from the old dvd player.

You have sound from cable? But not in 5.1? May need to check the cable box and set audio in it, or, send a digital audio from the cable box to the receiver and a digital audio from the old dvd player for its audio.

wont cover the hdmi upconversion as previous posts did.

as for the 5.1, the receiver might be set to straight mode, where it only plays what it is given. an easy way to see if the receiver is getting a 5.1 sound is by looking at the front display, if all 5 speakers are lit up on the right, then you have the 5.1 source coming in.

most tv is only broadcast in 2.1 however, which makes this difficult, one option to try is to go to the sound field programs and disable straight mode if its on, and enable the 5ch stereo, or the 5ch enhancer.

it wont be a true surround however, as the receiver can only do so much to process the audio to play in all 5 speakers.

dvd would be the main reason to take it off the 5ch stereo and back onto a different sound field program, as a reminder that model does not support the Dolby True HD or the DTS hd master audio, meaning that the big blue ray sound field will give you issues with that receiver. the HDMI cables are the only way for those sound field programs to go in, and well, the receiver doesnt accept hdmi audio. trying to listen to a blue ray movie through optical or coax doesnt work either from my understanding.

Your going to need to run RGB cables out of your receiver(component out) to the tv component in for video.

As far as audio goes are you talking about your cable box will not format in 5.1 DD? does your cable box support 5.1 DD? I know my direct tv system supports 5.1 all day.
Or are you talking about the DVD player only?

NOTE: On some receivers you will need to turn off the HDMI Audio out for the Digital Dolby to kick in and take over. It was this way with my Onkyo. I did not realize this for over a year and no tech person could help me either. The down side is you will only hear the audio out of the speaker system and not the TV speakers.

Last: get the blu-ray and be done! HDMI all the way!
