Component Monster Cables...

Hey. Just bought a big screen projector TV, and the guy at the store told me if I wanted a crisp image quality I should buy good quality cables. He sold me Monster Ultra S-Video cable for my satellite, and Monster Component cables for my DVD.

Told me that with this I would not get distortion and would get more image stability. Now these cables cost me a bundle, do you people think I made the right purchase? They are still in the package so I can always bring them back if I can pay much less for regular quality cables for the same image quality.

Thanks for your help...

That depends on how much you spent & how long the cable is. I got a 25' S-vid from Pacific Cable for about 1/3 the price of a 3m Monster and it's at least as good a cable. Back when I was a newbie I tried some various Monster cables (vid, ICs & speaker) and I have to say most of it was pretty average stuff for an above average price.

I also bought a set of 25' component cables there for about 1/2 the next cheapest place I could find, and they're true 75 ohm cables as well built an any Monster Cable I've used. I can't see an iota of diff between the 25 foot run and the 10 ft run of Monster.

Rob:

What would you consider an 'above average' cable (if Monster is avg)?

Sorry but...

You got ripped off...Just to let you know Monster has traing for sale folks and shows them how to upsell Monster products. There are a ton of other cable manufactures that are as good or better and for a lower price...you can check out dayton audio or AR at www.parts-express.com they also sell Monster.

JohnA, I am sure there are other cable companies that do the same type of wiring for cheaper...and looking at the Dayton Audio wires on Parts-Express, I can confirm I got ripped off...I'm in Canada, and I paid 160$CND (approx. 100$USD) for 6' component Monster cables. Now if you tell me that the Dayton will do the same job as the Monster cables, then I will return my Monster and order Dayton off your site. Can you confirm that?

I hate to pay for brand names...

I'd say Dayton & the Monster Cables you'd buy at a place like Best Buy or Circuit City are both average. And pretty much equal. If you're going to mail order them, Parts Express will give you quality at least on par with Monster for less. However, Pacific Cables are as good as either and cheaper than both. Plus, their service is stellar (in my experience, of course).

Whichever route you go I think personally you'll be at least as happy as you are with the Monster stuff. IMO, Monster is the Bose of cabling- they've created a really upscale image to move a decidely mediocre product. Of course, they do have a "high end" comparable price wise to most of the heavies (eg Cardas, AudioQuest, etc). I've read (although I can't confirm) that Monster Cable's gross sales are greater than every other cable maker combined, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. But it's strictly for the image concious.

I don't go in much for exotic cable, partly because I've yet to hear much difference that I can prove is due to the cable alone and partly because I simply can't afford to indulge in the "audio jewelry" fetish. My cables are a combination of AR (for the VCR & an old cassette deck) & Zu Cables, with speaker-cables I made myself. If I were a millionare I'd probably buy some Nordost Valhalla's simply because I could & call it good. Well, maybe. At some point I hate to encourage those guys.

Monster or not to Monster

Here is the thing...
Monster makes a very good cable (don't get me wrong)...howerver there are other cables of the same quality of monster for much less (as you have found)...Just to let you know the Dayton Audio can only (for the most part) be bought from Parts Express (it is their own name brand). And Rob made a good point that yes there are lower cost cables, even lower than Parts Express. You have to go with what you feel right about....if you don't feel good about monster now than return them, if you are ok with it than keep them. I support Parts Express, not only because of the selection of items, but their Customer Service is some of the best and with a 45 return policy...you can't go worng. Here is a quote that i found off an article here at Audioholics about speaker cables:

"Interestingly, the New Scientists recently commented on the London Heathrow Hi Fi Show, saying that among the cables selling for up to £30,000 for 6 metres, they found Quad demonstrating their latest speakers to great enthusiasm. The orange cable to the speakers looked oddly familiar. When asked about it, Tony Faulkner, the recording engineer demonstrating them (who'd used the speakers as monitors while recording Saint-Saen's complete works for piano & orchestra, Gramophone's Record of the Year), said of the cables:
"Yes, they would look familiar if you have a garden. Before the show opened we went over the road to the DIY superstore and bought one of those £20 extension leads that Black & Decker sells for electric hedge-cutters. They are made from good, thick copper wire, look nice and sound good to me. The show's been running for three days and no one in the audience has noticed..." - New Scientist Magazine

I hope this helps a little

Here's what...

IMHO, I don't give a red about wires. I am no video/audio specialist, and couldn't make out good wires from bad wires by either listening to audio or watching a movie. Only thing is, the sales guy that sold me the TV told me if i want a nice quality image, I need to go with high quality wires...thus the Monsters.

Unfortunately, Monster's supposedly high-quality comes at a price, and 330$ for two 6' lenghts of cable is in my opinion money thrown out the window. Now I do want my movies/TV to have a nice, stable, sharp image...so I thought I needed those Monster cables. I don't care for brand names, they could be called Pee-Wee Herman's Fabulous Wires for what I care, as long as they give me the quality I am looking for. So I've seen the Monsters in action, and if indeed other wires (i.e.: Dayton) do the same quality of image, then they are sold.

For a 2000$ TV, yes I'll look at the brand. For wires...that's another story.

God, decisions decisions... ;)

Just one comment- I also agree that Parts Express is a super company. Kudos to them; I've never had a bad experience with their products or service. I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years.
