Hello all,
I'm new to this website and would like some help if at all possible. Here's my question, Last night I went to best buy to get a new surround sound unit as my old one has went bad. I'm really wanting something kind of nice, but can't get very expensive. My reviewing of what they had to offer led me to want the denon avr-591 for $350. Upon arrival and talking to their professional "experts" the 20 year old said that system sucks and talked my wife out of it, who in turn talked me out of it. The salesman talked me into the pioneer vsx-820k for $300. But today upon reading about them I lost the video upconverting capability, which is something I think would be nice. The salesman said the denon sucks because it's very complicated to understand the directions, and extremely complicated setup. My way of thinking is the longer the setup, the better the sound quality. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me some help on this decision. Should I keep the one I have, or take it back to get the denon. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
John

I would prefer the Denon, but it would help to know what gear you're hooking up and your connection requirements. You can download manuals to get an idea how complicated they are.

Hello and Welcome to AH John, I'm a proud owner of a Denon now the manuals aren't the best in terms of telling you things in plain English but the link that BSA gave will help, I have used that more then once myself. The only beef I have with my Denon is the remote it looks like Denon has taken care of that with their newer models, but other than that I love it. I would suggest you look into Denon, Onkyo, and Marantz but that's JMO.

Best Buy? Salesman? 20 year old? That's 3 strikes against that guy.

Only a dork would say the Denon is crap compared to the Pioneer. The Denon has a few features that are more important to me and the average home theater user than the Pioneer. Both are made in part by Sherwood, however the Denon's have more of a signature on their lower end models by featuring larger power supplies and other specific alterations from the basic model that Denon wants to have. The operation of each will be entirely different, but the Denon will more than likely end up being far more rewarding once you've completed your setup. Operation after installation and setup will be easy.

You might even wait for the Denon AVR-391 which has similar features (a few cutbacks) but still a great deal for it's openning price of around $250. The AVR-391 seems to have the same amp section as the AVR-591, but this is not 100% verifiable without having seen both units.

That "expert" salesman saw you coming and talked you out of a decent receiver and into something pretty low-end for too much money. If you're in the US you'd be a lot better off with a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR607 for $280. It's last year's model and won't support 3D but it has a ton of features and is very easy to setup and use. If you're looking for 3D compatibility (HDMI 1.4) then you'll have to spend a bit more for the just now being released models.

Audioholics has "First Look" mini-reviews of both of both the Pioneer and the Denon. Have you read them?

For me, I think I'd go with the Denon for it's Audyssey processing.
