Comparing two similar PC speakers...

Hey guys... so, a friend of mine came to me with questions on which PC speakers to choose from, seeing that I'm an audio enthusiast (well, at least compared to him LOL). He preferred a 2.1 system for small footprint and big sound with quality. I recommended the ProMedia 2.1 to him, however I also saw another set with similar specs:

Boston Acoustics MM226

Same subwoofer driver size/power... similar two way speakers (tweeter, mids)... except the ProMedia has a single 3" driver whereas the Boston has dual 2" drivers. I've never owned nor heard the Boston so I'm just wondering if anybody here has and which choice is better? They both retail for similar prices... however the Klipsch is obviously more expensive everywhere you buy it, and the Boston seems to have a lower sale price.

Oh, and please exclude the Logitech Z2300... that set may be loud but has nowhere NEAR the quality for my reccomendations LOL! Thanks guys!

i had the klipsch promedia 2.1s and would definitely recommend them. never heard the boston acoustics so I can't really give any insight into them. however, the boston acoustics do look cheaper IMO. (cheaper quality wise)

The PoMedia is a known quantity. I've owned both the 2.1 and later the 5.1 Ultra and was pleased. I've since moved up but that's a whole different level of budget.

Oh yeah... add two more speakers for the comparison!!

JBL Spot
HK SoundSticks II

JBL is another brand I like... at least from car audio experience  those stock JBL speakers in Toyotas are beasts.
As for the Harman Kardon, I read excellent reviews and hear great things about them.

I don't know any of those systems but a 2" or 3" driver just does not cut it. It's too small to be able to get to the low frequencies.

I would prefer two speakers with bigger woofers (6") and without a sub.

Well hey, that's why it's gonna be a 2.1 system, the sats handle the mid/high frequencies while the sub handles the lows. ;)

I knew someone with the sound sticks. They didn't sound nearly as good as the promedia's sounded. I would stay away from them. And those JBL's just look like junk IMO.

Depending on the size of the sats, the crossover point can be as high as 800Hz.
It's like having 2 systems. One plays the mid-high/high frequencies in stereo and the other play the mid-low frequencies in mono.
It's a waste of money.

Cool, based on the research... I've narrowed it down to the ProMedia 2.1 and the Boston MM226. Personally, I'd probably try out the Boston since it's cheaper and the fact that I've had the ProMedia in the past... just wanna test out new stuff.
