comparable receivers to Yamaha 663

I've been doing some research since I've been given a receiver for Father's Day (Woo-hoo!). Any have any suggestions for receivers comparable to the 663 in performance and features?

These are what I've been looking at:
Pioneer 1018AH-K
Yamaha 663
Onkyo 605

Some things that I find necessary to have:
1) powered Zone 2
2) HDMI upconversion from component
3) black
4) video scaling chip - I believe that the Anchor Bay chip is a step-up from the Faroudja chip. Can anyone clarify what the differences are between the three DCDi chips (DCDi® by Faroudja, Faroudja DCDi Cinema™, Faroudja DCDi Edge™)?
5) Price/availability

hey pat, great news!

My present impressions: at your budget, I wouldn't look towards the receiver to scale. I would want at least Reon/Realta if I was to do so (1k price point) but even then, some people find that their tv (or disc players) do a better job. I have no idea which and how many video sources you want to apply VP to.

I would presume Anchor Bay is a step up. Well, Oppo's anchor bay unit costs like twice as much as their faroudja units, anyways.

Next, some Onkyos have real issue with conversion of component to HDMI, irrc/afaik.

It costs about $200 more than 663/605, but if your budget ever reached there, my opinion is that the 805 is pretty hard to beat. Do you need that much amp, maybe not, but some Aperions do have very low sens (no idea on imp).

I'd take 663 over 605 if just for 1 preouts 2 ability to matrix m-ch pcm (but evidently can't do so w/ hi def bitstream?). #2 only matters for 6.1/7.1, just fyi.

605 has more flexible bass mgmt.

805 gives you all of the above, + matrix bitstream, top of line Burr Browns, and nearly double the current of the 505/605/705. Seeing how much a decent amp costs these days, I personally think $200 could be worth it. It has 3 hdmi inputs. I also wouldn't look towards this unit to scale either.

just my 2 cents, gl pat.

ps/edit: the 805 was meant to be a $1k price point, and 605/606 as a $500 price point. Yea, real world, it costs $200 more... but it could be worth considering.

After talking with my supplier, I'm probably going to go with the 663. It all depends if the Pioneer will fit in my entertainment unit. It's only 18" deep and the Pioneer is slated at 17 1/16 inches. That doesn't leave much room for cables and such...I could always get some right angle connectors...size matters...

I'm taking the Onkyo off the list.

Should've designed the entertainment unit to be 19 inches deep!

Anyone find an image of the back panel for the Pioneer 1018AH-K? I've been checking everywhere. Only a frontal  on the Pioneer page!

The RX-V663 doesn't have a scaler btw. The RX-V863 does feature some derivitive of an Anchor Bay scaler (not sure which). Scaler performance is not dictated solely by the chip set used, it's more based on its implementation.

Missed that. I'm getting all these different receivers confused.
My primary choice is the Pioneer 1018. I just need to find a way that minimally damages my entertainment unit. My wife has already given my the OK to cut out the back...don't really want to do that. The Yammie will do nicely as a compromise...if I need to.

Receiver ventalation.

You will need a few inches of room on each side and above the receiver for proper ventalation. If you have less room, you will probably need a fan to help circulate the air. If possible, it helps to leave the back panel off of the cabinet.

Air movement shouldn't be an issue. It's plenty wide and the next shelf is about 6" above it.

Thanks for the advice.

The Pioneer looks very promissing. It should be superior to the RX-V663. The only thing is I haven't seen a scaler mentioned in regards to the 1018. I would have no use for the scaling, but if it does then it runs neck and neck with the RX-V863 at a few hundred less MSRP dollars.:D

It uses the Faroudja 1080p scaler. I've attached a pic from the Spanish manual that you can download from the Pioneer website. It utilizes the newest Freescale dual core chip.

Should be pretty rockin' when I get it! (Pick it up in July, if it's available by then)
