Comcast DCT6400 Question

Another question – if you please.

Equipment:

Denon AVR 3805 Receiver
Denon DVM 1815 DVD
Sapphire MKII Towers (Axiom M60ti Towers on order)
Sapphire Center Channel
Comcast DCT6400 Dual Tuner DVR

Have the optical out from the Comcast box connected to the optical (2) connector on the Denon 3805 for audio. Still have the analog audio out to the TV and both can work at the same time.

Have the DVI out from the Comcast box connected to the Sony KV-34XBR910 DVI for video.

Denon 3805 is set up for fronts and center speakers only. I have adjusted the cable box’s volume to four points from the loudest setting. The box’s volume line displays “stereo” at this setting. One point less or more and stereo doesn’t display.

In general the sound sucks from TV. (CDs, DVDs sound great.) If the channel is broadcasting in Dolby 5.1 and I have the 3805 in “TV 5 channel stereo” it sounds ok, otherwise (and with any other non Dolby 5.1 channel) the sound has a very low volume output and just doesn’t sound right.

Question: Is it a bad box. Did I setup something wrong? What am I missing?

Thanks

Sounds like a setup problem in the Motorola box and maybe in your receiver as well. When I get a program that is broadcast in DD 5.1, my 3805 shows "Dolby Digital" on the faceplate and it outputs true DD 5.1 sound (quite well as a matter of fact). Check the following site...a little dated as to the hardware, but the box sofware is pretty much the same.

Thank you Mort

Thank you.

Learned a little more today. I will be trying the instructions from your link tonight.

Another thing you might want to check is that your 3805 input mode is set to "auto" (IIRC) that way when the audio signal comes from the cable box in an analog format (like regular TV stuff) the receiver defaults to Pro Logic II surround but it recognizes DD .1 as a digital signal and changes automatically....assuming you have a coax or optical cable going out from the box to the receiver.

It's been a while since I set my stuff up (and I tend to leave things alone once it's done and I'm happy) but I think I had to set the box compression to heavy to get level volumes on most all channels. Then again, maybe not....it's tough getting older and afflicted with CRS :D
