Just like me to have my first post be a question.

I recently purchased M-Audio AV40 speakers for my computer and XBOX setup. I have two questions about them. First, I am getting interference over my laptop sound card (I have an HP DV6700t with a Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 sound card), but I am on a tight budget. Are there any decent quality USB sound cards for under $100? My next question is about equalization. I had upgraded from JBL Creature II speakers, which had settings for the bass and treble levels. Is there a program that equalizes all of the sounds made by either the system or all running programs? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I got a Creative X-Fi USB a couple months ago and it works pretty well. It has a built-in EQ that you can adjust and it will apply to all programs. In the past I also had a Creative Soundblaster Extigy that was very nice but it required an AC power supply and therefore wasn't portable.

The downside is that the X-Fi requires a fast computer for smooth playback. My netbook with a 1.6GHz Atom is not quite fast enough for completely stutter-free playback. It might be my operating system configuration though, not entirely sure on that one.

If you buy it from a place like Best Buy though you can always return it if it doesn't work out.
