reciever: kenwood vr-407 (soon to be replaced)
dvd: pioneer dv-578a
gaming: xbox (modded), gamecube, dreamcast
speakers: DIY vifas up front, the remains of a kenwood HTiB for the rest (change when i get taxes maybe)
tv: samsung 27" flat screen
vcr: generic sanyo (just to play the older stuff)

soon-to-be-added:

more DIY speakers (big fan of my tb setup for my pc, may do something for the HT)

What are those DIY speakers you have like (components, size...whatever details you have for us). Also, I'd recommend looking into some used/older receivers over the Pioneer. It's not bad, but from a friends experience, you can do better by looking at some older stuff.

the speakers i built for the mains consist of vifa 1" tweeters and 7" mids. both purchased from parts express, with the mids being an infinity buyout IIRC. i need to build better crossovers for them (only have a cap on the tweets at the moment and nothing on the mids). they do sound nice, but could use more bass (was told this may be an issue cause i only have one mid on each speaker, but my reciever couldnt handle a 4 ohm load). all in all, they do sound very nice for only paying around $100 for the pair.

on my pc, i have the famous 3" tb w3-871. they are some of the best speakers i've ever built and only came to $50 for the pair. they are running off my cambridge soundworks pc speaker setup (as the mains) and the lows are taken care of the sub that came in the CS package. i actually built my parents a HT setup with these speakers and they are very pleased (not audiophiles, but wanted nice sound in a small package). $200 for 5 speakers complete was money well spent on 'em.

i wouldnt mind trying to build some nice TL front speakers and have a complete matching set (same drivers in all) for a 6.1 setup.

as for the reciever, i already ordered it and its being delivered sat. its got all the features i could want (including pre-outs on all channels). i got it off ebay after i got sent a non-working Yamaha htr-5560 (which was very nice, but useless for previously stated reasons). the yammy was looking to be too expensive to fix and i'm awaiting a settlement with ebay/paypal over the damaged goods. i have a DIY 6-channel amp almost built (based on the gainclone amps) that may power the system.

If you have a separate amp, i certainly wouldnt worry much about the receiver you're using. Do you still know the model #s on those Vifa drivers?

the mid and tweet are from the TC line of Vifa. got em through parts express. the mid is identical to the one they sell, just with a different color trim ring.

just added a "rack rider" power center to the setup (i just need extra plugs and no longer feel safe with the $5 radioshack power strip)....

SQ Kid, you're jammin! Are you an EE major by chance?

I started building my own speakers and crossovers during the slack period between high school and college when I was working a full time grunt job. It was a means to an end because the only alternative was buying Sparkomatic products.

As I got better and my techniques became more sophisticated, it became a hobby. Later, in college when I realized my choice of Physics as a major was an ill-conceived choice, EE was a natural default choice purely because of my by then all consuming DIY hobby.

Can't wait for some pictures of your home grown theatre!

i'm not an ee, actually a business major just about finished. but one of my roommates is.

the speaker thing has been a hobby for a while, but i hope to eventually open my own car audio/performance or home theater shop down the road.
