Cold Play destroyed my player.

My Samsung player barfed up today when my wife tried to play a Cold Play song. I almost did, too, but that's beside the issue. The player now plays everything sort of muted with lots of hiss, crackle and pops. I've never had a player die on me before, so I don't know what the issue might be. I'm hoping somebody can suggest what might be wrong and I hope there's a simple fix.

In the meantime, I may have the opportunity to try a little upgrading. My wife kinda feels bad that maybe its her fault (not likely) and she's been researching DVD players on her own to replace it. She's come up with the Cambridge Audio DVD89. Any comments about this player?

Oppo Digital

Check out the Oppo Digital players. They play DVD-A and SACD in addition to great video upscalling capabilities. Let the wife pick (the silver one or the black one). The Oppo DV970HD is working great on my 32" LCD.

LOL, I don't mind some of their songs, but it is funny that your player made a statement about its own preferences in a big way :)

For a budget player, I'll second the Oppos. I read that the internals of the CA players are actually the same as the Oppos. www.oppodigital.com

I too have had problems with Samsung players, just not with Coldplay. I know someone that just purchased the Sony upconverting model (cheap one) and it does a good job of upconverting (better that Samsung:D).

My first progresive player was a Samsung - that lasted a whole 24 hours before it went back. I just was not impressed with it at all.

A friend of mine bought one of those upconverting Samsung players, long story short, because of its cantankerous nature he gave it to me for free.
The Sony DVPNS75H he got to replace it is pretty nice, though.

But to Davemcc; this is the only bench test of a Cambridge Audio DVD player, it's not of the DVD89, but it can give you a idea of what to expect from Cambridge Audio.

The 540D is an older model and uses different internals from the most recent ones.

oops, that's me being negligent for not looking at the year of manufacture. On the other hand, it gives you an idea of how Cambridge Audio DVD players used to perform ;)

Coldplay?!?

No wonder the CD player crapped out. I think your player had better taste in music than you do. :D

HEY! What is wrong with a little Cold Play?:D
I agree! "Clocks" will always chear me up.

EDIT: BTW, for the money I'd go for a OPPO player. I have the DV981HD which upconverts to 1080P. Plays both SACD's and DVD-A's. Also a great picture.

UGH. Chick rock. I can't stand bands like Cold Play. I swear when I hear that stuff, I can feel my breasts swelling.
You might want to see a doctor about that.:D

I am going to listen to Cold Play now.:(;)

That would be me :D well... my dad's player anyways.
Yes, granted it isn't a Toshiba SD-9000... but it looks (picture quality wise) damn good for the cheap.

Sorry for being absent from this thread after starting it. I did get the Cambridge DVD89. I looked long and hard at the Oppo, but after shipping to Canada, exchange, brokerage and taxes, I guess I only payed a little bit more and I supported my local independent audio store.

I wouldn't mind salvaging the Samsung if possible, but I wouldn't know where to start.

Hmm.. Maybe I'm just more sensitive than you. Wait, if I'm sensitive, then how come I can't stand Cold Play?

The enhanced sensitivity is probably what causes that…. it may be genetic. ;)
