Coax audio not working?

I have extra component video cable so I was under the assumption that it would work for coaxial audio (there is another thread here where I was told this would work). This goes from my DVD player to the receiver. When I go through my receivers options and select the "coax" for the audio assigned to the DVD player it changes back to "analog" after I leave that selection screen. According to the little diagram on the front of the receiver it shows all of my speakers as being active, yet I don't think I'm getting the full surround sound. My first thought was maybe I have the coax in the wrong plug on the receiver and will check that tonight when I get home, but if it was in the wrong port I shouldn't get ANY sound, right?

Thanks!

Check the output settings on your DVD player. Make sure that it's set up to output "bitstream" for the surround sound modes that your receiver can decode (Dolby Digital and/or DTS). The default setting on most DVD players that I've seen is "PCM" for DTS and (for older DVD players) Dolby Digital.

Also note that the receiver or remote may require you to hit a certain button to 'save' your new selection. I remember that some people were having similar issues with settings on a Yamaha receiver because it required you to hit the right arrow key on the remote to save the setting.
