Coax amp/splitter question

My lovely wife bought me a Hauppauge PVR-150 and the Beyond TV software. :)

As an interim measure, I split the cable going to my TIVO (a guy can't have enough DVR's!) But, the picture quality decreased significantly and I need another cable drop in my living room.

Fortunately, I have an unfinished basement immediately below my living room, so running the cables (thereby eliminating the several splitters) will be easy for me. I would like to take the opportunity to eliminate the 3 or more splitters in the chain.

Once I get all of the cables wired in a home run fashion to a central point in my basement, what sort of splitter/amp/distribution system do you recommend?

I think I will have 8 or 9 coax drops going there, and if I am lucky, I may buy another PVR card or two...so I would want some expansion room! :D

If you're using old fashioned analog cable, you can go to any electronics store and get a booster that will allow you to to supply several components and/or splitters. They cost about $25. If you have cable internet, however, you should use a cable splitter to branch your cable out to your computer or router before it hits the booster. Sometimes those boosters add noise that has a bad effect on internet service.
