Close Doors Button on Elevators

Why do they have this button? I can only recall a single elevator that the button actually did something. Drives me crazy...

That button does about as much good as a volume knob on a lawn mower......

it's a built in stress ball.

it kills the awkwardness of doing nothing in the elevator when you walk in.

it gives me excitement ... "close! close! close! before somebody else comes in" "hold the elevator please!" "muhahaha"

i can't live without it.
