Hi All,

I know that Monster cables are not very popular because of their exorbitant prices and kiss-*** marketing strategy. However, after reading the cable article "Video Cable Shielding--What Works, Why, and the Myth of "Quad-Shield" Cables" by Blue Jeans cables, the specs of the CIPRO RG6 Quad Shield cable sound pretty good.

The shielding is foil-braid-foil-braid. I have seen two descriptions on the web. One says the braid layers are 95% coverage copper, the other says 85% coverage aluminium. I don't know if there are two kinds of this RG6Q-500 or what. I cannot find real specs from the manufacturer anywhere although there are a hundred stores that sell it.

What say you about the CIPRO RG6Q cables?

Thanks,
James

I'm not familiar with the cable you mention, but can say that the aluminum braid RG6 Quad I've worked with employs 60/40% coverage. The copper braid type I've used has a 95/95% coverage.

Hope that helps.

Thanks fo rthe reply Dumar. What is the cable that you use that has 95%/95% coverage copper braid?

That sounds like the Canare LV-77S Coax (95%/95%) If I were building a cable, I think that I would go for a foil/braid combo. The Belden 1694A uses this method (I think it's a 100% Foil and a 92% braid). The only downside of the Belden is the fact that the Center conductor is solid, so it isn't as flexible as the LV-77S or another Belden video coax, the 1505F.

Belden 9290 uses a 95/95% copper braid with no foil (it is not quad shield), and as jaxvon points out is not as flexible as stranded core coax. The 9290 has a minimum bend radius of 2.8” (compared to 2.4” for the Belden 1505F) and hasn't been a problem for me. The thing about solid core coax is you want to be careful it doesn't get kinked. I like to use solid core because I prefer connectors that don't require special treatment of the core conductor.

I also find that the single braid/foil cable that jaxvon mentions is easier to terminate than quad shield cable ... you have to study the data sheets and decide which cable works best for your application.

I did a quick search for the CIPRO RG6 and believe it to be 95% copper braid and 100% bonded foil (not a quad shield cable).

Have fun. :)
