I can't take it anymore. I've learned more on these boards in 2 weeks, than I will ever use in a lifetime. My brain is full. I dream about this stuff.
I need to get a life & you all are gonna help me.

I have the Athena Micra 6 HTIB, along with a pair of Athena AS-F1's, with a
Yamaha RX-V650 receiver.

What is my best choice for a DVD player in the $250 or under range?

90% movie watching.....10% music cd's, store bought & burned.

Thanks...Jeff

:)

save you money for a HD DVD player in the next year or so and get a decent progressive scan DVD player in the $100/$150 range. I have even seen some DVD players that are SACD capable as well for around the $120 range.

I got a JVC player for $150 about a year ago and the picture is pretty damn good on my HDTV 57incher

Personally I wil not touch HD players until the 2nd generation. I would suggest the Panasonic s97. Secrets of Home theater regularly do extensive testing of dvd players and have found the pic quality of the S97 to rival the Denon 2910 which is more than twice the price. Onecall has unit for around $260.00

since you it would be 90% dvds your descision should depend mostly on if you have a hdtv or plan to get one in the near future. For hdtv I understand that hdmi is the highest quality connection available and is supposed to be way to go, i might be worng. If so and if you do own a hdtv your obvisouly your concerned with picture quality and willing to pay a little more for it so I would serioulsy think about doing the same with your player and buying on with hdmi output and maybe get one with the farajua chip or however you spell it like a yamaha or denon. They start in the 500$ price range here in canada but when you buy one youll be also upgrading to a much superior sound quality then a $150 dvd player which really is more dedicated to dvds and picture than audio. Yamaha also released a dvd/dvd-a/sacd player with the hdmi that sells for $499 here. or you can wait a year for like the other user suggested. If hdtv is not an issue and either is sound quality sound like the panasonic is your best bet. My previous player was the panasonic F87 (200$)and it did the trick before I upgraded to the Yamaha c750 ($400) which plays sacd and it was a noticable improvment in vidio quality and a significant improvement in audio and in my opinion is worth the extra $200 bucks soley for the audio upgrade but for me its about 50% dvds 50% cd/sacd/dvd-a. all the prices are in canadian

The Pioneer DV-578A-S is about to be replaced by the new DV-588A-S and is therefore becoming very affordable. I've seen it for as low as $129 CDN at Futureshop. Its a great mid-level player that will work with anything you throw at it.

I'd suggest that you look into Pioneer models if you're going to watch a lot of burned DVDs. They seem to be solid with nearly every brand of DVD media. I'd recommend a Denon player for a good picture and nice sound, but my Denon DVD player doesn't like burned DVDs very much. YMMV.

I think it would be crazy to wait a year for the new formats! Sure, I wouldn't buy a $2,000 model now, but you're not gonna get burned too badly if your $250 player becomes 'obsolete.'
