I am moving all my gear to a rack in a closet for a clean look.
So I will be moving the power line conditioner I have used for over the past two years.

*Can/should I plug my 1150HD straight into a wall socket?

My house is a shared home with two units/apartments, so I cannot do Whole House.
I won't have a rack, so I'd like to avoid any gear if possible at the display wall.
I have lived here for ~2 years and have only lost power twice. Once was a full area blackout and the other was a short off then back on that fried a pump I had ina reef tank at the time.

hell no....

all kinds of dirty power will be allowed to pass into a delicate, complex high voltage power supply. Newer gear is even more at risk with how delicate ic's are. They sell little 1 or 2 outlet surge protectors for situations like yours. You know now that you said "I have lived here for ~2 years and have only lost power twice. Once was a full area blackout and the other was a short off then back on that fried a pump I had in a reef tank at the time." The power is gonna surge for sure now!

Use a high quality surge protector.

Ignore the "dirty power" BS.

I would use a 2 outlet surge protector, the kind that just plugs right into the wall. It's just a little bit of insurance against surges.

Yes, You can plug it directly into the wall. What do you think everybody that has a tv that doesnt have a proper power conditioning unit do? Most people will go out, buy a 10 dollar "surge protector" and think its doing good. Yah.... Right. Those things have a limited lifespan before they dont do anything at all. If your tv is going to blow up being plugged into the wall directly, Anything that is reasonably priced probably isint going to prevent that from happening.

That's a good point and something I think about from time to time. Where did this need for 'conditioning' come from when 99% of the public just plugs their devices into the wall? Full disclosure - I have an APC H10 but I bought it mainly for surge suppression and ease of plugging everything into it to minimize cable mess. If the conditioning aspect of it works, and I have no reason to doubt that it does, I have not noticed any difference in audio or video quality.

Still, I would always use at least a basic surge suppressor. Surges are somewhat common and a little insurance is a good thing, but there is no device on earth that can protect from a catastrophic surge caused by a direct lighting strike.

glad to see you solved your clutter problem. Here in florida it is common to get surges, so recommending good protection is par. If you feel that your investment is fine with out it, thats your call. IMO spending 20-30$ on plug in protection as opposed to 3500$ for a new panel is a no brainer.

I'm willing to spend more, say ~$150 or so.
So what protection exactly would be good for me and my set-up and situation?

just what i expected from johnnythan or however you spell that BS name....lol
Dirty power is hard to come by, and more often than not these so called "power conditioners" don't do jack. For the record, what you said about all that dirty power getting into the TV is BS.;)

Get a surge protector rated for about 4000 joules, I wouldn't spend over $50 to get one.

Is that really better than what bandphan linked? Better than what I linked?
Thanks so much guys, you are all awesome!
I don't know about better but if I know anything about Seth, it's gonna be cheaper. :) Here's a little something Rickster71 recommended for some one. I thought it was cool. If I remember right it was for a guy asking about a low profile plasma surge solution. Anyways, enough credit where credit is due, here it is:

Oh come on!!!!:D

You can't tell me you've never heard of snake oil getting into the surge protector business. I see no reason at all why someone should spend that much on something that is inferior simply because it costs more (naturally higher cost means better:rolleyes:).
