Cerwin Vega VE12F

Hi....

I was wondering if anyone thinks a pair of Floorstanding Cerwin Vega VE12F's would do well as compliments to a pair of Boston Acoustics VR20's.

I'm planning on putting both on one amplifier. My current amplifier is a Yamaha RXV492, but I'm considering upgrading that too.

Cuz the BA VR20's really don't push a lot of air. They have decent bass response but it's not stuff that makes your head rattle or nothin. You can't FEEL the bass. And I could get a devoted sub, but why?

I want 2 more floorstanding speakers for a more surround sound feel anyway.

So would Cerwin Vega VE12F's be a good choice? I'm choosing them because they have a 12" sub. They also sell VE15F's, which have a 15" sub. The Vega's would be the rear speakers, and the Boston Acoustics would remain the front speakers.

Any suggestions welcome!

The VE12F's handle up to 300 watts. The VE15F's handle up to 400 watts.

The RX-V492 amplifier delivers 70 watts to the front channels and 20 to the rear.

I think I'm just letting my good speakers go to waste with this underpowered amp.

I was thinking...a Pioneer VSX1015TX 7.1...

Cuz otherwise these speakers are handicapped.

Am I wrong?

Depending upon some issues, such as your listening level, there are undoubtedly dynamics that the speakers are capable of that are not being reached.

If you want to compliment your BA's, buy BA's for your 2nd set

Is bass response the major shortcoming here? Sounds like a bass issue, but I'm just guessing here.

If bass response is the issue, consider a decent subwoofer. The lack of bass w/the VR20s is not surprising as their frequency response is likely (and realistically) not any lower than 50Hz, if it's even that low. A solid sub w/the 20s crossed over correctly from your receiver will bring the VR20s to life. Unfortunately, I don't believe these are close to full range. Unless they're fairly capable towers (35Hz and under), you're likely to get subpar bass from them for deep music passages and typical LFE in movies.

If you to use your system 25% or more for movies, a good subwoofer is a neccessity... -TD
