Hello,

My friend is selling his Cerwin Vega CLS 215's for a very good price and I am thinking of buying them. I really don't know that much about how to power these speakers... what would be an effective but AFFORDABLE way to safely power these speakers? I will be buying four of them. Thank you guys in advance for all the help... any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What are you going to do with 4? Surround sound home theater but without the center? (which is fine in most cases)

As far as amplification, I'd say anything in the 100 watt per channel or more range will easily do. I'm sure they're rated at a ridiculously high max power rating (given their size, driver configuration, and knowing CV), but that doesn't mean you need huge amounts of power to power them. CVs are actually pretty efficient speakers so you actually need less wattage to power them than a lot of speakers.

As someone that owned CVs back in the day, and whos girlfriend's sister owned a pair of 215s, know that CVs are very much quantity over quality. Cheap cabinets, minimal bracing (or zero in the case of their smaller speakers), cheap mids and tweeters, etc. If you're 20 years old and about to enter a fraternity, congratulations, you've made a great speaker choice! If you're almost anyone else, you might want to look around a little more. :)

How great of a deal are we talking here, if you don't mind my asking?

Haha, I knew someone was going to make that comment, and I have to agree with it. They are very "youth inspired speakers"... but I like the way they sound. Right now I just plan on hooking two of them up to my tv and the other two I might put in my room for my stereo... but I have been toying with the idea of hooking all four of them up to my tv with two speakers per channel... but I don't know yet, I'm waiting for someone more knowledgable to lead me in the right direction.

Another reason I am buying them is because he is going to sell all four to me for $650... so I feel like I can't pass them up. Some places gave them some pretty good reviews like soundstage.com

If anyone else has any advice please feel free to say anything that you feel will help me.

Thanks again.

Can anyone suggest an affordable receiver to go with these speakers? I only plan on hooking two of them up but I plan on using them for fronts to a surround set up later... then I will plan on buying an amp and pre amp to power the rest of the speakers... any suggestions on receivers... and then amp or pre amp?

Thanks guys

Those seem to be rather efficient at ~97 dB/w/m. It's unclear if they are 8 ohm nominal, but at that sensitivity, it probably doesn't matter. You would be okay with any recevier that is rated 100 wpc or above, but make sure it has pre amp outs so you can add an amp later. But it seems a good pro amp may be better as those large woofs would benefit from the extra juice.

The Behringer Europower EP400 amp would be a good choice down the road:
