Center to match with Boston VR2's

Hey guys,

I've been using a Boston VR920 ever since my VR12 blew a tweeter but I'm just not happy with the setup. The 920 just seems to be missing something that the VR12 had. I'm thinking of getting a new center but I looked at what Boston currently has and nothing gets me excited. I know it's generally best to stick with the same brand or type of speaker for the front 3 speakers but this just isn't an option for me as Boston no longer makes the VR12 or a replacement tweeter.

Do you guys have any recommendations for my setup? I was looking at the XRC 6.2 from Emotiva. But I'm open to suggestions.

Shameless plug, but if you go the VS325C route... I have one in all gloss black in like new condition (still has protective plastic on it) that I'd part with.

My father's system has a VR-12 center, and I hate to say it but you're going to be hard pressed to replace it with something newer. I've found that they have a pretty distinct sound to them and boston's do not sound anything like that anymore. You'd be best looking at the used market, though they made so few of that particular model you may have to settle for something in the same line.

Theres a VR 10 on Audiogon I think its just a smaller version of the VR12

I wouldn't get the Emotiva, as some one said above BA's older VR speakers had a certain sound too them and I doubt Emo would match well with the other Bostons.
I've listened to a VR-10 and it's VERY different. I would not suggest it.

Edit: but the tweeter would be identical, you could get it for parts.

Quite possibly the same, not positive though.
Time to contact BA. I'd ask for every model that they have ever made across the board that uses the same tweeter. Then start hunting all of the classifieds. This has got to be cheaper than a new center, and* you will likely have extra parts (possibly an extra tweeter if you find small bookshelves, and/or even some usable woofers too).

I was once looking for a single tower for my center speaker, from a company that didn't sell single towers, and I found a vendor that was holding on to a pair because one of the two was very damaged during shipping. So I got a deal, and actually chose the damaged one to use after repairing it with the help I received here. What I'm saying is to start contacting all of the BA vendors in your area to see if they have something sitting around for you (after you have the list of potential speaker/model candidates). You never know!

Just called Boston and they said that one would be close but not exactly the same. How much are you looking to get for it?

I can't believe I didn't even think of that. I'm sure I can find a VR10 somewhere. I think I'll just do that and swap out the tweeter. Thanks for the suggestion.

So I ended up buying a VR10 and the tweeter itself does indeed look the same, but the housing it's in is smaller.

VR12 tweeter on the left, VR10 tweeter on the right. Dammit, don't know why Photobucket rotated the picutre. VR12 tweeter is on the top VR10 on the bottom.

Backs of tweeters, again VR12 on the left, VR10 on the right.

I'm going to try calling some local stereo repair shops and see if someone can swap the VR10 tweeter into the VR12 housing. Anyone know if this is possible?
