center speaker placement question

I just purchased a new HDTV and dont really have a place to set my center speaker (my old tv had room and i had it set on top).

My question is:

-is it alright to have the center speaker lower then ear level angled up toward ear level? or do you have to have it ear level or higher to get good sound?

I have my Bigfoot below my tv & angled up. It works fine.

In the tutorial in the sticky on speaker placement it advises to use a laser pointer or something like that & make sure that when it is placed on top of the speaker the light points to your ear level. I didn't use a pointer but a flashlight & it worked out ok.
