CD Player needs medical care

I have a Yamaha CDX-500U CD Player that my parents bought in 1986. The CD tray will not open or close because of a stretched rubber pulley. The electric motor that moves the pulley which in turn moves the teeth that push/slide the CD tray outward still works, but the rubber pulley has stretched over the years and will no longer grip.

Where on the internet can I buy a replacement rubber pulley? It looks like the size of a rubber band...which I may even try to use!

Links would be greatly appreciated.

...a smart@$$ but, first let's get the nomenclature somewhere near accurate...is it a pulley? is it a drive-belt? is it an idler wheel of sorts?

Have you contacted Yamaha? You will need to have someone ID a p/n or at least the specs...Yamaha service or possibly a local service house would seem to be the source for such info...exploded diagrams and all that happy stuff...

If it's a drive belt and you can remove it without causing further damage any reputable supply house should be able to provide a suitable replacement. You will want one with a slightly smaller diameter to account for the stretch-out-factor. All the other dimensions and cross-section type info should be as identical as possible to the original.

If it is a pulley(?) or idler wheel, Yammie-land may be the only source...however, if its a replacable rubber surface on a wheel, you might luck out as indicated above or, quite frankly, a rubber band may even do the trick...

A rubber band *might* work but most likely not very well. The movement would be uneven and it would likely stretch/no longer grip quickly.

I've tried the rubber band solution on an old tape deck before. Didn't work to well. :D

My suggestion is to buy a new one. In todays market, a $40 DVD/CD player is probably much improved and better than the one you have. Im amazed that it's still around after 20 years.....LOL

My 2 cents.

I second that opinion.

As much as we all dislike loosing our audio friends, sometimes it is best to put them out of their misery.

All it is is the black rubber pulley that attaches to the plastic gearing mechanism that slides the CD tray outward so you can place the CD onto the tray.

Yes this is a 20 year old CD player, but I want to use it for a Music-On-Hold situation for work.

Why don't you take that belt/o-ring, whatever to a place like Home Depot and perhaps you will find something there a bit shorter?
