Now more or less obsolete, many music lovers have "upgraded" to digital formats. Going through my 200-plus tape collection I found many have holes on both ends of the case, I'm guessing it was for some type of steel rod security system?

I didn't buy many pre-recorded ones, tho and don't remember that at all for blanks. It does make me think of perhaps fitment in a display rack....
