Cassette deck hookup to Denon AVR2808CI

I hooked up a Sony cassette deck to my Denon AVR2808CI to the phono input with the white/red RCA cables. The sound is quite bad and I'm not sure if this was the best input to use. When I assign the photo input it says "analog only". Would a cassette deck be analog anyway? Would it be better to use another input with the same cables? Like the VCR input or something?

Hi. Do not use the phono input for anything except a turntable that doesn't have a pre-amp. Definitely plug the tape deck into a different input. The VCR inputs/outputs, as you mentioned, would be a fine choice.

EDIT: The VCR inputs/outputs are recommended in the owner's manual for a tape deck.

Thanks again Adam! I'll make the switch and post how I make out.

Had to check. Looks like they dropped the Tape input labels on the "08 models. Well the 1708 still has it. So does the 1909 so it's not dead yet. Eh eh!:p;)

You can use ANY analog input on the receiver for the cassette deck other than Phono which is only applicable to a turntable.

It doesn't matter what it is labeled as the labels are just conveniences for us humans. You could use the input labeled 'vcr', the input labeled 'cd', or even the audio inputs of a video input labeled 'video 1', etc.

The nice thing about using the VCR or DVR inputs for a tape deck is that they have corresponding outputs. That's what you want for a tape deck if you are using it to record other sources connected to the receiver.

Why did it seem like Cassette Deck = Phono? Analog is continuous signal and Digital is signal broken into discreet increments. Cassette tape and phono input are made for analog, but the phono input has a preamp and RIAA equalization, which is why it sounded bad.

The manual has diagrams for connecting just about any kind of equipment. You might want to look at it.
