That's a question for Dennis ... both speakers looked very nice. My guess is that someone wanted a front baffle with the black finish that isn't in Dennis's wheelhouse.... maybe.

How far are you from silver spring MD?

I'm curious as to why Salk is building Pilharmonic speakers. Is it to get a piano finish?
According to Dennis, Philharmonic Audio will produce the Phil Slims in several standard veneers at the price of $2700 per pair. If people want other veneers or finishes, they can buy them through Salk at a higher price. I forget what that price is.

That's why there were examples of both Philharmonic-built and Salk-built Slims at the show.

A GTG at next year's CAF is an excellent idea ... for people who live less than 8 hours away.
Nice idea… but not at my house!

About 8 hours.

Salk built Slims ... wow ... now I'm extra glad I wasn't there. I'd rather not spend the next few months trying to forget that. I was about to say that I could look up the footprints of the Slims to compare them to the the SongTowers but that would be like throwing spark to tinder.

How do you think those sound compared to the STs?

Did anybody bother asking AJ what his damage was? I'm surprised and glad to see him at this level. He was showing his speakers, right? Is there a forum that he is allowed to post on? I'd like to see what he has to say about stuff he saw at the show. He certainly knows stuff and I'd like to see him do well in the speaker business.

$2700 for Slims? That's about the price of the ST ribbons. It would be cool if demand forced a production center ... and if KEW bought a front stage that he wanted to sell to me after enjoying them for a while in a home theater setting.

I think Adele is my new Dire Straits. I've got 21 on CD and Vinyl, plus I've got the Royal Albert Hall performance. I know they're all different recordings and even different performances but the stand out most fun is the live performance in Dolby Digital on the SongTowers and SongCenter ... but it ain't too shabby in here (ManTown) on Dennis' MB-27s accompanied by Dr. Carter's sub alignment and Walter's turntable. My least favorite is the CD anywhere. So much for fair comparisons.

It would be cool to find Fanfare for the Common Man on vinyl.

Dinner is served. Later.

I don't know how anyone can go to one of these shows and not just burn with desire.

I have yet to figure out why AJ was banned. He could be abrasive at times, and he certainly didn't put up with blatant ignorance or tolerate audiophoolery. I think his successful launch and his approach are vindication. I think he was banned for being correct

My mind must be mush. What was AJ's screen name?

Hmm. That gets me thinking about smoking a brisket or two. Same recipe as old Swerd. No crashing at my place however.

The craziest thing for me at CAF was finding an old music label/distributor I knew in the eighties Wayside Music/Cuneiform records that I used to order some very obscure stuff from. They had a booth on the 4th floor. Hadn't thought about em in 25+ years! Picked up some samplers. For speakers I too found myself most pleased by Dennis and Jim's stuff. There were a bunch of electrostats there. I've always been intrigued by them but most of them sounded flat and lifeless.

My thought was for people to get a hotel room and we could hang at or around the hotel. The show is big enough to keep us entertained...I do like brisket though...ummmmmmm brisket...

Okay ... you don't want your families to know but you still wanna party.
That's cool. :D

I attended a PETT DIY speaker GTG up around here. This guy, Les, brought his DIY electrostats. They were deemed best or most accurate in show. He had a DCX-2496 for a crossover and EQ. It was a pretty sharp set-up. Les was a pretty sharp guy. The 2 Magnepan set-ups I heard at Rick's and Jeff's were also pretty nice. I think Rick had the best in room speaker placement. Doug and I liked that set up quite a bit. Those speakers actually belong to Markw. He graciously sat off to the side while Doug and I soaked up copious amounts of Dire Straits from the money seat, the 'love' seat.

All three sounded different. The DIY electrostats seemed most neutral. That might be described as flat and lifeless due to there being no part of the audio spectrum jumping out to grab your attention. I'm not suggesting that was the case with the electrostats you heard there at CAF.

If by correct you mean insulting and unruly, then I agree, :D
I support the ban. I'd also support a little forgiveness. At least enough forgiveness to hear what he has to say and then maybe another ban.

As tempting as the brisket sounds, for me the big draw would be hearing those Vandersteens of Dan's. Flying in would be the best option. That would also insure that I didn't bring anything back from the show. The last time I went down there I needed a small SUV to handle the bounty. That was awesome. :D

I'm about 2.5 hours from DC, but not at my house either. No parking, and you need 4WD or a donkey to get here.

Ya think?? Soundfield Audio has one serious PR problem. I wouldn't accept his speakers as a gift - they'd always sound harsh to me.

AJ would get heated up over stuff. I remember some of the thread where he was challenged by multiple people about his chasing the rabbit down the constant directivity hole. Only now some years later to have someone say "Soundfield had what I’d qualify as some of the best sound in the entire show"

There were threads where people were ganging up on the guy. And it turns out he was right.

There is a reason that you never found me personally at odds with AJ. I knew when I was talking to someone that forgot more than I knew. So I shut up and listen when this type of person is going to give me a free education. Same with Dennis, Ben, Curt, Zaph, JNeutron etc...

I prefer flat response. Particularly my Vandersteens, the Phils and the Salks. I imagine the electrostats are very sensitive to room placement and they guys didn't have time to fool with it enough to get it right. My Vandersteens are also sensitive to that but I have had time to play with it a bit since they are mine. Brisket and tunes? I am a former radio DJ so it would be natural... Silver Spring is about 20 minutes away.

I think I figured it out. It's Doug's fault that I'm looking at other speakers. Good thing is that my speakers don't mind me looking and sometimes even touching is okay. My speakers are very open minded.
