Canton Fonum 701
Hi, did you get the Cantons?
I just saw your post.
I have the Canton Fonum 701 speakers.
I bought them in 1994.
I'm using them on a Kenwood KA 9100 Integrated amp and a Onkyo T9 Analog tuner both from the late 70s.
I also have a Yamaha CT7000 tuner.
Its one of the greatest FM tuners ever.
I'm telling you, the Fonum 701 are the best 1200 dollar speakers.
The 701's sound very fast with nice midrange and the bass is tight, upbeat and very articulate.
Canton also made a Fonum 601 speakers around this time, which sold for 1000 dollars back in 94
They used two 8 inch polypropylene woofers and the tweeter in a MTM design.
I listened to both the Fonum 601 and Fonum 701 and literally they sounded the same to me.
I wish Canton would bring both of these speakers back.
Back in the late 80s and 90s, Canton was using polypropylene woofers and midranges.
I always liked the Canton polypropylene drivers.
They were inhouse Canton drivers.
The top of the line Canton speakers back then were the Ergo series. I remember the Ergo 91 and Ergo 81.
The main difference i remember between the Ergo and the Fonum series was the cabinet. The Ergo's had a nice Cherry wood cabinet. Both the Ergo's and Fonum speakers used the polypropylene drivers.
The speakers that replaced the Fonum 701 and Fonum 601 were the Canton Fonum 730 and Fonum 630.
They were pretty much the same looking speakers at the 701 and 601, except on the 730 and 630 speakers, you could take the grill off.
On the 701's the grill is built into the speakers.
I wish i saw this thread when you posted it.
Did you ever get to hear the 701 speakers?
Thanks
