Hi. I have an rca budget htib rt2360 and my entry level panasonic dvd player recently stopped spinning and I got a sweet deal on a new sony dvp-ns975v universal player. I have a monster optical from dvd to receiver and monster s-video running from dvd to tv. Couldn't wait to hear what sacd sounds like so picked up a beethoven disc today and put it in the player but nothing is coming out of the speakers. I'm sure that its probably obvious but I can't seem to figure out how I'm supposed to do something different. I would be extremely greartful if anybody could point out what connections are needed or whatever it is that i am missing. thanks

Hey Pix. SACD and DVD-A cannot be played through a digital optical (or digital coaxial) cable, only through six analog cables going from the back of a universal player to the back of an a/v receiver. Are you using your HTIB as the receiver? If so, is there six analog inputs, one for each speaker? (If there is, I'm kinda surprised -- I didn't think HTIBs could support hi-res audio.)

Good luck, Pix!

cheers,

In order to hear the hi-resolution SACD layer, you need to use the 5.1 analog connections from the dvd player to the receiver. Given that you said it is a 'cheap RCA HTIB' there is a good chance it does not have a multi-channel input. Look for a set of 6 input jacks labeled '5.1 analog in' or 'multi-channel in' on the receiver or post a picture of the back of it and we can tell you if it has the inputs needed for sacd.

Note: Some SACD discs are hybrids and also contain a standard 2 channel redbook cd layer. You would be able to play that using only the digital connection - but not the hi-res sacd layer.

You will have to set your SACD/DVD-A settings to two channel and use one of your spare 2 channel inputs. That is the only way you will be able to hear SACD or DVD-A on your system.

any ideas for an amp that will work ?
The amp isn't the problem. You need a pre-amp or a receiver that has 5.1 channel analog inputs. That's what is needed to hear a SACD in surround (5.1). As was said, currently the best you can do is SACD in stereo.

i meant any receiver recommendations. sorry. what is a pre-amp?

A receiver is essentially a pre-amp (sound processor) and an amp all in one, a pre-amp just does the processing and you have to buy an external amp to power the speakers. What is your budget for a new receiver?

A pre-amp does the signal processing and the source switching. An amplifier amplifies the signals to the power necessary to drive the speakers. A receiver is a pre-amp and amp all in one nice package. Some people prefer to buy these 2 components separately. If you see the term pre/pro, it refers to the preamp portion or the preamp/processor.

Looks like Spiffyfast already covered this, but I'll post this anyway.

Recommending a receiver is hard unless you can be more specific about what you need/want and your budget.

This is totally a different issue but can anybody tell me the best way to watch cable tv with audio from the receiver. I used to go through my vcr but it is packed away for lack of space and zero vhs use ever since I bought my first dvd player. I have a 24" sony wega. thanks again!

I hadn't really gotten that far yet. I pretty much would like to find the best deal I can, considering yesterday I didn't even know I would need a new receiver.

I really want to thank anybody who is answering my questions and offering suggestions. I was so frustrated yesterday and am glad to know it was a hardware problem and not just me.(wish the hardware worked tho)

Well the best deal is something different to different people. How about at least a price range <$300, $300 - $500, $500 - $1000?

You should have an output on the back of your TV labelled monitor out or audio out or something (red and white). Run a cable from this output to any receiver input that is open. This will now be the input you want to switch to when listening to the TV's audio. For example, if you hooked it up to an input called aux, switch your receiver to aux to hear the TV output. Your receiver might have inputs specifically labelled for TV audio in, but any input will work. Go into your TV's audio menu and turn off the TV speakers (you may have the option for variable or fixed). Now when you are watching TV the audio will only be heard through the receiver.

Cable box option?

I took a look behind my 27in Sony Wega, however my input's and output don't appear to be in the same configuration as the picture you posted. Based simply on the picture you provided it appears that your TV does not have monitor outs. However you may have another option to explore. If you have a cable box there is a good possibility that you have audio outputs there, if not we may need more detailed information about your set in order to solve this problem.

One option...?

I looked up your set on the Sony website and it makes no mention of audio outputs per se. However it does mention a headphone jack, which means you could use a mini-plug to rca Y splitter to connect your TV to your receiver, however this connection is less than ideal. That's the best that I can come up with, sorry.
